A remake of The Grudge is hitting the big screen in the summer of 2019. If you have not seen the original movies, the story follows a house cursed with a vengeful ghost who dooms everyone who enters.

To get you excited for the newest version of your favorite horror film, here are a few facts about The Grudge you probably haven’t heard before:

1. The story is based on a Japanese supernatural horror film entitled Ju-on: The Grudge. It was the third installment of the Ju-on franchise, which consisted of thirteen horror films from Takashi Shimizu.

2. Ju-on: The Grudge was shown at Screamfest Horror Film Festival in Los Angeles California in 2002. In 2004, the remake was made with Sarah Michelle Gellar and Jason Behr — but it was still directed by Takashi Shimizu. The newest installment, coming out in 2019, is the first Grudge film that will not involve Shimizu. It is going to be directed by Nicolas Pesce.

3. Ju-on: The Grudge was not based on a book. However, after it was released, books were published about the characters in order to give them more depth and a deeper background.

4. The ghosts that appear in The Grudge are based off the Japanese legend of the Onryo. The Onryo is a vengeful spirit that can physically manifest itself to attack and kill victims.

5. In the 2004 film, the iconic shower scene was as uncomfortable for Sarah Michelle Gellar as it was for audiences — but not because of any ghosts. Sarah discovered she was allergic to Japanese water and had to wear garbage bags from the waist down in order to prevent itching.

6. Even though there are a lot of similarities between the 2002 and 2004 versions of the film, in the Ju-on version the monsters move much slower. The horror scenes are more fast paced in the American version in order to keep the viewer’s attention.

7. Spoiler alert! In the Americanized version of The Grudge, Takeo kills his wife, his son, and his child’s cat. In the Ju-on version of the film, the murders are more subtle. They are never actually seen.

8. Horror movies have a bad reputation when it comes to unexplainable tragedies. There were multiple mysterious deaths during the filming of The Exorcist and The Omen. That is why, before filming the 2004 version of The Grudge, the cast went through a ceremony where they were blessed to assure nothing bad would happen to them.

9. In the 2004 film, the snapping and popping sounds that appeared along with Kayako Saeki were made with a hair comb. Meanwhile, the gasping ghost sounds were made by Takashi Shimizu himself.

10. The newest version of The Grudge is being released on June 21, 2019. It will star Jacki Weaver, who you might recognize from The Silver Linings Playbook, Andrea Riseborough, who has appeared in Black Mirror, and Betty Gilpin from GLOW.
