10 Reasons To Ditch Childhood Friends Now That You’re Older
By Zoe Morris
I will always feel thankful for the friends I have had in my life and what they have helped me go through. This is simply a reminder for every 20-something that change is going to happen, it is inevitable.
1. If someone wants to be in your life, they will make the time and effort to do so. Friendship should always be a two-way street. For a long time, I would put forth the effort in many friendships, but it was not reciprocated. In the long run, I ended up wasting my time and feeling like I wasn’t a good enough friend.
2. People change. The friends you had in college may be living somewhere else now, they may be working, they may be married, or they may still be figuring out what they want to do with their lives. Everyone is at a different point in their lives.
3. Just because you are no longer friends with someone does not mean that they do not care about you or the memories you shared. For a long time, I would think back on various things that have happened and wonder what if things had gone differently? But the times that you did have happened, so cherish the memories.
4. Just because someone is no longer in your life does not mean you did something wrong. People grow apart, people’s priorities change. That is not your fault.
5. Not everyone is going to be able to provide the support that you need. I know that I need a certain type of support from the people in my life. When someone is no longer contributing positively to my life, that is my red flag to let them go.
6. Do not ever try and force someone to be a part of your life. If they wanted to be there, they would be.
7. I have gone through a lot of difficult times in the past few years. I did lose a lot of friendships due to the challenges I went through. If the same has happened to you, stop feeling sorry for yourself, because those people are no longer in your life. You don’t need them.
8. Do not base your self-worth on someone else’s opinion. You are enough and you are not too much to handle. Maybe a friend ended up resenting you or maybe they thought you were too much, and quite frankly, that may have been the case and they have every right to feel that way. But that does not make either of you a bad person.
9. Everyone’s personality is different. Some people don’t click the same way in their 20s as they did in their teens.
10. In the end, people change. This may be cliché, but those who are meant to be in your life will be. And those who are not around right now may find their way back. What is meant to be will be.
