10 Times I Hope It Hurts When I’m Not There
By Melissa Remo
It’s amazing how in a short period of time, two people can go from being strangers, to lovers, to best friends, to partners—only to be broken down to strangers once again. Not everyone in your life chooses to stay, but the memories do. When I think of the memories, it hurts—and I hope it does for you, too.
1.
When you need someone to dance with at the next wedding, I hope it hurts when I’m not there.
2.
When your aunts ask you how you’re doing and where I am, I hope it hurts when I’m not there.
3.
When you need someone to listen to the new song you wrote, I hope it hurts when I’m not there.
4.
When you need someone to vent to about your day and the difficult people you work with, I hope it hurts when I’m not there.
5.
When you need someone to proofread that email for you and make sure you don’t sound like an illiterate fool, I hope it hurts when I’m not there.
6.
When you need someone to back you up and tell you that you look nice with your scruffy beard, I hope it hurts when I’m not there.
7.
When you need to iron the sh*t out of your shirt to look your best (you were never good at ironing), I hope it hurts when I’m not there.
8.
When you just want to wind down with a Guinness and an episode of “West Wing,” I hope it hurts when I’m not there.
9.
When you fall asleep at night without me holding on to you tightly like I used to, the way you loved me to, I hope it hurts when I’m not there.
10.
When you’re feeling lonely and remember all the times I’ve told you that I love you and we’d end up arguing about who loves the other one more, I hope it hurts when I’m not there.
I meant it when I said “I love you” and I still do. For once, I’d just want you to feel my pain, because every day it hurts when you’re not there.
