This was a trailblazer and it set the course for a number of movies to come. Many tried to replicate the style of The Blair Witch Project, but very few succeeded. Cold dark evenings of October are surely the ideal time to cuddle up and watch this Gothic horror film. It’s another successful collaboration between Tim Burton and Johnny Depp, immensely improved by the appearances of Christina Ricci and Christopher Walken. This is a wonderful take on one of the greatest haunted legends of all time.

7. Halloween

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xHuOtLTQ_1I&w=560&h=315]It started in 1978 and over the years it has become an institution and a must-see on every horror fanatic’s list. Halloween is the movie that will make you want to turn on every light in your house and check every lock and key twice. The reason for this might just be that its events are so realistic and could very well happen in real life. A murderer who kills his brother and sister while still a child, gets locked up in a mental facility, escapes, and comes back more vengeful than ever? Yep, it’s scary because it sounds true.

If you manage to get past the way Leatherface and his family of cannibals look like, you will probably realize how funny and ridiculous some of the murders are. 11. Nightmare on Elm Street

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dCVh4lBfW-c&w=560&h=315]
Wes Craven had many strokes of genius along the way, but with this one, in particular, he hit the horror genre jackpot for a few simple reasons. The most important one is that you’ll never be able to go to sleep the same way again; you’ll be too you might end up in a dream you cannot escape. Also, Johnny Depp makes his film debut, even if his appearance in the movie is not a long one.

12. The Exorcist

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YDGw1MTEe9k&w=560&h=315]
This is a prime example of the kind of horror that you will never forget. You’ll be relatively alright after a few weeks, but if you are unlucky enough to remember its plot at night, chances are you’ll sleep with the lights on again. Some might expect it to be cheesy and not scary enough, just because it was made in the ‘70s. But, if you dare, you’ll see that there is nothing quite like The Exorcist.

13. The Babadook

This spooky Australian thriller works on so many levels. It’s practical yet metaphorical. The Babadook is the sinister monster that we’ve all been afraid of at least once during our childhood, but for this movie, in particular, it also takes the role of a think-piece on the difficulties of raising a child as a single parent.
