1. Tim Kaine is the Democratic nominee for Vice President of the United States. He is running on a ticket alongside Hillary Clinton.

2. He was born in St. Paul, Minnesota and is the eldest of three sons. The family soon moved to Kansas City, and Kaine attended college at University of Missouri.

3. Kaine grew up Catholic, and his faith led him to take a sabbatical from law school to serve as a volunteer in Honduras. While in Honduras he learned Spanish, and he taught the location population about welding and carpentry.

4. After graduating from law school, Kaine married Anne Holton and moved to Richmond, Virginia for work. He has lived in Virginia ever since.

5. For most of his life, Kaine wasn’t particularly interested in politics. He became intrigued in local issues after regularly attending City Council meetings in Richmond.

6. That interest led him to run for City Council, and eventually he was selected to be Mayor of Richmond.

7. While serving as Mayor, Richmond was named one of “the 10 best cities in America to do business” by Forbes magazine.

8. In 2005, Kaine was elected as Governor of Virginia. A year later he would deliver the official response to George W. Bush’s 2006 State of the Union address.

9. As Governor, Kaine protected natural lands from development, establish a commission on climate change, and secured additional state funding for nurses.

10. Kaine was also Governor during the start of the 2008 economic recession, and he oversaw increased unemployment and foreclosures in the state.

11. Many people thought he would be chosen as Barack Obama’s running mate in the 2008 election. He was ultimately passed over for Delaware Senator Joe Biden.

12. After his term a Governor expired, Kaine taught University classes before running for Senate and becoming Hillary Clinton’s running mate.

13. While Kaine is personally against abortion, he does not believe it is the government’s job to interfere in a woman’s medical choices.

14. He is also strongly against the Citizens United decision that opened the door to virtual limitless campaign spending.

15. Kaine supports the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) and supports Obama’s delayed deportation plan for undocumented minors.

16. Controversially, Kaine is also a free-trader and has spoken favorably about both NAFTA and the TPP.

17. Kaine has constantly been elected in pretty close elections. His biggest ever margin of victory was roughly 5 points when he ran for Senate in 2012.
