20 Things You Should Never Say To A 20-Something

1. “Wow, there are really no jobs out there right now, I don’t know how you guys do it. I couldn’t even imagine having to be broke at your age.”

2. “Are you sure you’re really applying to everywhere you can right now? Sometimes you just haven’t looked hard enough.”

3. “You should really start thinking about marriage, you don’t want to end up single at 30. You can’t just sleep around forever, you know.”

4. “Oh god, I hope you didn’t take out student loans.”

5. “Why didn’t you major in something serious? Didn’t you want a real job?”

6. “I know that [full time, unpaid] internships are tough, but you really have to think about your future. You’re getting a lot of valuable knowledge and skills that you wouldn’t have otherwise. It’s just part of the ladder you have to climb.”

7. “Do you have an online dating profile?”

8. “Don’t you want to do some investing or get some real estate? You know, make a financial future for yourself? You can’t live check-to-check forever.”

9. “So, when are you going to have some kids already?”

10. “If you just keep going out to bars, you’ll never meet someone serious. Do you just want to have one-night stands for the rest of your life?”

11. “Why do you still live with your parents?”

12. “Why are you working in a restaurant if you went to college? Isn’t that kind of what college is for?”

13. “I’ve seen Girls, I know how you guys all are.”

14. “You should stop complaining so much, just because you can’t find work, doesn’t mean that you should just give up on developing as a person. After all, there is a lot of responsibility that comes with a job, and there’s something nice about having all that freedom for a while. You can just enjoy yourself, you know?”

16. “You should be more serious about your future. Life isn’t just one giant party, you know, and you should probably start setting up some serious foundations for the rest of your life. You’re [definitely, because there are no other options in life] going to have a family some day, and you’re going to want them to have something stable.”

17. “Are you a hipster? You look like a hipster.”

18. “Didn’t anyone ever tell you that no one will buy the cow if you give away the milk for free? You guys are all so quick to sleep with each other, how about leaving a little something to the imagination?”

19. “Your generation knows nothing about sacrifice or hard work.”

20. “All you have to do is get your foot in the door, the rest is just hard work. If you’re willing to put in the hours, only good things will happen for you.” (They say as they hold the door firmly closed with all of their weight against it.)
