23 People Reveal Things They Liked Before They Were Cool

1. MACKLEMORE!

Macklemore and Ryan Lewis. I’m even in the thrift store video so I literally liked it before ANYONE knew it existed (let alone thought it was cool).

2. RADIOHEAD

True story: Flashback to early 1993. I was visiting a friend in Oxford and it was my first time in England (I’m American and so is the friend). At some point while we were downtown, he pointed out a few guys (two? three? I can’t remember) walking down the sidewalk on the opposite side of the street we were on and he said “Oh, that reminds me! Those guys over there are in this great local band and their first album comes out a few days before you leave! You really should get it since you’re here and probably would have a hard time getting it anywhere else, you know, since they’re local.” I was sure to pick up Radiohead’s Pablo Honey before I left.

3. ZACH GALIFINAKIS

I used to think Zach Galifinakis was real funny and I thoroughly enjoyed his stand-up. Then, a few years ago he became “That funny guy in Hangover with the beard”

4. POGS

pogs. i was in a bike shop as a kid and saw them, but they were not advertised as “pogs”, but as “milk cap covers”. i bought 4.

5. BEING A HIPSTER

I liked being a hipster before it was cool, then it became too mainstream so now I listen to the black eyed peas.

6. NETFLIX

I’ve had Netflix since 2003.

MUSE. As an added bonus, I started disliking them before that started becoming popular too.

8. RYAN GOSLING

Ryan Gosling. I had a crush on him from the Mickey Mouse Club on. I recognized him in “Remember the Titans” and rewatched that movie a million times. I recorded “The Believer” on VHS when it aired on Showtime. Then “The Notebook” came out and every girl in the world flipped their shit.

9. DONALD GLOVER

Donald Glover. He’s blowing up as both a rapper (Childish Gambino) and comedian (Troy from Community). My love for his stretches back to his Derrick Comedy days.

10. ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT

I liked Arrested Development the first time they aired it, and knew it was cancelled before it was on Netflix.It’s annoying how many Facebook updates I see from people that “discovered” the show on Netflix and say it’s an unknown show, and how mad they are that it was cancelled. I lived through that shit, man. Same thing with Futurama, I’ve been with that show from the beginning. And Flight of the Conchords – saw their first HBO special years ago and rewatched it over and over because I couldn’t get enough. Now they’re the most popular indie band and television show that “nobody’s ever heard of.”Oh, and Karl Pilkington.

11. THE ORIGINAL IPOD

The original iPod. People actually made fun of me for having it.

13. PARAMORE

The band Paramore. I can understand why people get mad when their favorite band becomes hugely popular, the concerts get so expensive and crowded, tickets sell out within days of being available. First time I went to their concert, it was in an open dirt lot and I was able to be right up front just by getting in line early and staying up close to stage during the opening bands. It was awesome.

14. LEGGINGS

Also, leggings. I wore leggings in high school and everyone said they were lame. Now all the bitches wear leggings.

15. GAME OF THRONES

Game of Thrones. Read what books had come out before the T.V. show.

I got made fun of in high school for listening to dubstep and my classmates yelled at me to turn it off.

My grandma used to send us a certain hazelnut spread from Germany, before it was even made in the United States, and I’ve been eating it for my entire life. But I’m glad you peasants have finally tasted the divine flavour that is Nutella.

There’s a rapper who’s starting to become rather big lately. His name is Macklemore. I’ve known about Macklemore since about 2009. He’s got a few songs out now that are becoming pretty popular called “Same Love” and “Thrift Shop” I’m not upset that everyone is starting to hear of him, quite the opposite in fact. I’m really glad he’s succeeding in spreading his message. If you haven’t heard of him yet, check him out.

21. SKINNY JEANS

Skinny Jeans…I got taunted throughout middle and high school for wearing them, 1996-2000…everyone was wearing those ridiculous JNCO’s. I rock the skinny jean now though…why? Because I am almost 30 and I still can.

22. MP3s

Back in 1994, I had a friend at Harvard who was researching ways to compress audio for his computer science PhD. He sent me a new piece of software and a couple of bizarre files that played music and songs with little tiny files! Before that, it was either small (and poor sounding) *.midi files or HUGE *.wav files for voice and music. It was one of the first MP3’s (even though it wasn’t called MP3 yet.) I started collecting MP3’s early. I had about 100 before they were even a real format.

23. BARACK OBAMA

I remember in late 2003 or early 2004 I was a real political geek, paying attention to races around the country when my buddy Byron told me about this liberal guy running for Senate in Illinois, Barack Obama. He was running fourth in the primary polls, had a funny name, it was a likely GOP pickup, but he was a tremendous speaker and progressive. Wouldn’t it be cool if he won the nomination? I met him at a fundraiser here in Austin after he became nationally known and bragged to him that I was into him before he was cool. He thanked me (no security, no press, maybe one handler hanging back). Not so into him now, but I’ll tell my grandkids that I met him when.

Yeah well I saw Kings of Leon in a free concert at the Apple Store in Soho before the band sold out completely, so obviously I win all the cool points.
