3 Brilliant Things Children Can Teach Their Parents
1. What worked for you back then will not necessarily work for us now.
You were 20 years old two decades ago or even three, and times have clearly changed since then. The ideas and beliefs that may have worked for you during those days do not necessarily work for our generation in these modern times. As technology has changed over the years, so have we. Some traditions die out as our way of life continues to be changed by the times. Ways that may have gotten you where you are now may not be the same ways that will be used by the younger generation to get to where they want to be at this time or in the next 5-10 years, and even by then, things will be different. The generation after us will come up with new ways to achieve things or make life better.
2. We have dreams of our own, and we appreciate your support.
My dad had always wanted me to become an engineer like himself and my mom wanted me to become a nun or some other. But I was inclined towards other things, so when I entered University, I was a Political Science freshman, but then shifted into a Business degree for my 2nd year (with the influence of my parents still), and now I am going to take my Master’s degree in a place that is 11000kms away from the place that has been my home for 22 years. Although, at first, my parents were hesitant to send me abroad for further studies, but I fought for my dream, as I have already been exposed to the European lifestyle when I spent 3 months there for summer school, and they eventually gave in. One thing that never leaves my mind is something that my dad said when we were discussing my future plans one night after dinner; he said, “I want you to be happy.” — and I am happy now that they have accepted that I want different things from them. If you want something, you have to fight for it even though it will entail sacrifice on both ends. Support goes a long way, trust me. And don’t make your children feel stupid for having dreams.
3. Your fear of the world is greater than ours.
Let us explore the world. Let us discover the undiscovered. Let us make our own mistakes and learn from them. The more you hold us back from getting into the nitty-gritty of life, the more we will be close-minded and unfulfilled in life when we get older. Our generation should learn how not to be afraid of life and grabbing it by the reins. Whatever your fears are, we will be the ones who will overcome them for you. We might even be the ones to show you that there is nothing to be scared of. Life is not perfect and the world is not perfect, but we will learn to live in it if you set us free and let us find ways to survive it.
