4 Uncomfortable Reasons Why You’ve Lost Sight Of Your Real Passions

By

Losing passion. It happens to the best of us.

One day you’ve found what you’re looking for. That thing that keeps your mind racing all day and keeps you working all night. It doesn’t matter about the money because you love it. It’s ‘never about the money’, right? You’re broke but you’re the happiest you’ve been.

A year passes. You’re still grinding but you’re exhausted, so you say, ‘I’m just gonna slow down a bit’. You pick up some side work to pay the bills. Next minute, it’s two years later and you can’t even remember what you use to do. You’ve lost all passion for the one thing you thought you loved but hey, at least you got a pay rise at that 9-5 job.

Losing your passion is so normal and there are a number of reasons why it happens:

1. It was never your passion to begin with.

Sometimes we’re under so much pressure to find something we love and to stick to it. Our time is running out so we latch onto the first thing we think we’re interested in or we’re remotely good at..that doesn’t necessarily mean we are though. In a moment like this, take a step back, explore other things you like and see how they feel. If it’s what you really want to do, you’ll somehow find your way back to it.

2. You’re not getting anywhere.

How annoying is it when you work so damn hard but you just aren’t getting anywhere? It’s exhausting. The hours, the hustle. It can be too much for some people. This can be super demotivating, to the point where you want to throw in the towel. Sometimes you’re grinding so hard, you can easily forget about how much you actually love it. Take a second to regain that passion and know that eventually, the hustle will be worth it.

3. You’re burning out.

Burning out is dangerous. Not only can it cause physical health risks, but it can mentally screw you up. This is the kind of job stress that comes from overworking yourself to the point of exhaustion. You don’t sleep, you barely eat and you’re pretty much living and breathing your work. Super dangerous. Just ask the founder of Huffington Post, Arianna Huffington.

In 2007, Arianna collapsed from not enough sleep and exhaustion. Managing to wake up in a pool of blood after breaking a cheekbone and hitting her head, something good actually did come out of this. She started a company called Thrive which focusses on workplace wellbeing, as well as writing two books around the same topic. Take this as a lesson to look after yourself, get enough sleep and make time for other important things.

4. You’re getting bored because you’re stuck in your comfort zone.

Doing the same thing repeatedly can take a toll on how much fun you’re having. You could simply just be bored for a while. Maybe it could be a sign that you need to broaden your skill set and learn something new.

The comfort zone is a beautiful place — but nothing grows there.

The comfort zone is scary shit. It’s so easy to get stuck in a skill set that you’ve mastered, and then get bored of it. Take a risk, dive into something that’ll benefit your passion and you’ll see how amazing it feels to grow in your art!

Don’t feel too bad if you come to a stage where you’re demotivated and feel like you’re losing your passion for something you loved. Look at the bigger picture. Maybe it’s time to move on to something else, take a break or learn something new that’ll help you get back into that hustle and grind!
