5 Basic Girl Code Rules We Need To Start Honoring Again
Being brought up on a steady diet of chick flicks, Beyonce, and rosé wine, I’ve heard the words “Girls always need to stick together!” more times that I can count.
We’ve all heard of the unwritten laws of Girl Code, and yes, while there aren’t any set rules, we all know the general idea of it. It’s something that’s been playing on my mind for a while. Because while I don’t agree in separating people based on their gender, there are some things that girls experience that only another girl can understand, and for me that makes a kind of kinship.
Women’s rights are growing stronger than ever, so shouldn’t we all have each other’s backs now? Instead, I’ve seen a lot of people posting on social media about supporting each other rather than actually doing it.
Here’s a few parts of the code that I’d like to bring back:
1. Support successful, powerful women
We all want to be successful—that’s just a fact. But in the workplace and in general, women have always struggled to get to places of power. So, if you see one, don’t let jealousy get in the way. Support them, show them some love, and let everyone know that a woman can be in charge. Maybe then we’ll start to see some change.
2. Don’t be the type of girl who just “doesn’t like other girls”
Most of my friends are men, but I still love the company of women. I’ve heard so many girls saying, “I just don’t get along with women. I don’t like the drama!” Well, you’re the problem, I’m afraid. You’re helping so many stereotypes about us stay in place and making it worse.
3. Don’t forget transgender girls
While transgender women may have a slightly different experience than cisgender women, they’re still our sisters. As women, they still face the same discrimination we do, oftentimes having to couple that with the judgement they receive for being transgender in the first place. So when you see a transgender woman talking about womens issues, remember that they’re just like any other woman and don’t let some hidden bias get in the way.
4. Always help a girl getting unwanted attention
I’ve had my night saved so many times by a hero swooping in and getting me out of a nasty situation. If you see a girl who looks uncomfortable or scared in her situation, interject. Get in there, pretend you’re her friend, try and get her away. We’ve got to look out for one another.
5. Always tell a girl about their shady partners
I don’t know why the response to a girl having an unfaithful partner is often to laugh about her being clueless. That needs to stop. I was there a few years ago. I was talking to the boyfriend of a girl who was a friend of a friend. We’d hung out a few times and I didn’t think much of it. Then the dick pics came. The first thing I did was tell him under no uncertain terms to stick it somewhere and called her to tell her exactly what happened. I didn’t know this girl that well, but I would never think of laughing at her or keeping it a secret. Honestly is the best, and she and I quickly became friends after that.
There are so many things that we could do to further the place of women in the world and lift each other up instead of breaking each other down, but we’re always going in the right direction.
So, grab yourself a girlfriend and never, ever forget the code!
