5 Things You Should Know About Dating A Musician
By Melissa Remo
1. He won’t be around all the time.
No musician is ever going to stay in one place for long. It’s what they do. Whether he’s a struggling artist or Justin Timberlake, he will be gone a majority of the time. From cross-country tours to endless nights in the studio, you have to understand your boyfriend won’t always be around. This is 2014 – there are more than enough ways to stay in touch: phone calls, texts, Skype — but remember he is doing his job and fulfilling his dream. You should be too. Find a happy medium in long distance communication.
2. Expect to spend a lot of time with his band mates.
These guys are his best friends, his coworkers, his confidantes. If you mean anything to him, you will eventually cross paths with his friends. They may just be his band mates but these bromances go a lot deeper than any intimate relationship. It may seem like just another day at the office for your guy, but time with his band is everything he needs to get to where he wants to be. Once you’re in with the guys, you’re in for the win.
3. You may or may not be his inspiration.
Your guy is an artist. He takes what he sees and pours his heart out into his music. Don’t be that girl that doesn’t want any songs written about her. And definitely don’t be that girl needs to have every song written about her. Accept he has had relationships before you and let him use those experiences to create his art. When the time comes for him to pen a love song for you, be honored to be an inspiration and show him you appreciate his thought. Just keep in mind you have as much of a chance to inspire a love song as you will a breakup song. Watch yourself.
4. He’s a sensitive soul.
There will be days he’ll want to keep to himself. Whether he’s a sweet country crooner or punk rocker, his music solely depends on his emotions, and sometimes he’s just going to need to time to feed off of them. Other times he’ll need you to just sit there and listen to him, because maybe you’re the only one that can understand him. As a writer myself, I can relate — we take everything to heart and we remember every detail. Allow him to feel his emotions to the fullest.
5. He’s going to have fans and groupies.
This is a given. He’s cute, he’s talented, he’s being followed by a ton of girls — this is the reality of dating a musician. There will be people who will like his music and most of them are going to be single women. Yes, they’ll be at every show and commenting on every picture he posts on Instagram. Don’t let the flirty emojis bother you — you are the girl everyone wants to be. Remember that without his fans, he would not be where he is now. It’s okay to be jealous and course some girls may overstep their boundaries but it is important that you trust him. He didn’t choose his fans but he did choose you.
