6 Things You Forget To Thank Your Grandmother For

By

1. For Her Home Cooking

There’s nothing like looking forward to a home cooked meal at grandma’s place — that special pie or cake or casserole she does that makes you happy. Even when she gives you the recipe over the phone — and she loves teaching you how to cook — it just never comes out right. That’s because it’s missing that special grandma touch that only she can put in it.

2. For Always Being In Your Corner

Grandmothers have a special way of defending their grandchildren no matter what they find themselves in or whatever life issues come up. Even when you’re having a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day, you can always count on your grandmother to be there to give you piece of mind, to stand in your corner and to be there for you when it seems like there’s no way out. She’s there for you even when you forget to call from time to time and even when you forget to send a card on Mother’s Day. You will always be her baby.

3. For Letting You Do That Thing Your Parents Never Let You Do

Grandparents nearly always spoil their grandchildren, letting you get away with things you know are off limits at home. But you don’t love your grandmother because she lets you stay up later or says “yes” when mom and dad say “no.” It’s more that your grandmother is older, wiser, and has a different perspective on life. You staying up an hour later or eating an extra piece of candy won’t really impact your life later on down the line. Grandma knows that kids just want to play.

4. For Her Sense Of Humor

Grandparents are always the life of the party because they have zero fucks to give. Literally none. They’re old and unbothered! But sometimes they’re funny even when they don’t mean to be, like when they pronounce things incorrectly or don’t fully understand what email is, or when they get slightly tipsy at Christmas. Grandma’s aren’t just for good food and letting you get away with things. They’re really fun, too!

5. For Her Wisdom (And For Getting You Together)

Grandma’s have a way of giving you life lessons that you will always keep in mind. If I got in trouble or didn’t listen to something my grandmother warned me about she used to tell me, “A hard head makes a soft ass,” meaning if you don’t listen to wise advice you’ll end up on your metaphorical ass. It’ll hurt and you’ll wish you listened to her when you still had the chance. I always think of this phrase even when I’m giving advice to my friends, younger cousins or anyone else — “A hard head makes a soft ass.” How do grandma’s know EVERYTHING?

6. For Loving You Unconditionally

No matter how much you mess up in life, no matter what mistakes you make or how many times you travel down the wrong path, your grandmother loves you unconditionally. You are her baby. The only reason she tells you about yourself so easily is because she really does want the best for you. Nobody’s perfect, even grandparents, and they want you to avoid the same mistakes they made in their life. They love you unconditionally because they remember what it was like to be young, to have grandparents, too.
