7 Songs For The True Divas Out There

This is a playlist for a true queen (or king) who knows his or her worth and is not afraid to show it to the world. This isn’t a list of the best songs to dance to in the club or a list of songs with sick beats and a sexy singer. Being a diva is more than that. These are songs about your own worth — not the importance of someone else in your life, nor the value you have when other people like you.

1. RuPaul’s “Sissy That Walk”

RuPaul knows how to capture the attention of everyone in the room, and that’s what “Sissy That Walk” is all about. It’s a song with a beat and hook that are as sickening as RuPaul herself. In addition to being the perfect song for the club, “Sissy That Walk” is an instruction manual on how to be a true Glamazon, how to accept and love yourself, and how to make your haters eat it. The best line of the song: “Unless they paying your bills, pay them bitches no mind.”

2. Willow Smith’s “Whip My Hair”

Some folks might be hesitant to accept this song as a true diva hit due to its adolescent sound, but the song is undeniably fierce. The whole point of this Willow Smith jam is to do what you want, regardless of what others think. A diva ultimately does whatever they want, whenever they want, so this song fits right in with the other queens. And, real talk: it’s nearly impossible to not want to whip your hair when this song comes on.

3. Erykah Badu’s “Tyrone”

If you didn’t know this song before, now you know it. The incomparable Erykah Badu serves confidence, independence, strength, and sass on a platter with the unforgettable “Tyrone.”

This song is a perfect reminder that the people we date are not perfect, and that it’s perfectly okay to call them out on their shit — and to tell them to hit the road when their behavior gets really tiresome. We seriously need more artists like Erykah Badu.

4. Avril Lavigne’s “What The Hell”

We’re all tempted to misbehave and rebel every now and again. When a diva acts out, they own it and they don’t let anyone shame them for it. This song really speaks to the ladies who, unlike men, are force-fed feminine ideals like innocence and chastity. Avril has never cared, does not currently care, and probably won’t ever care what people think of her, proving that she is pure diva.

5. Marina and the Diamonds’ “Oh No!”

Divas set goals and won’t stop until they reach them. “Oh No!” is all about a person who knows what he or she want to be in life, and won’t stop until that goal is reached. The hook is all about this striving for success, while other segments of the song talk about the realities of working, not living up to the standards we see in television, and the fear of failure. A diva doesn’t need to be perfect, and admitting one’s fears and the harsh realities of the world makes a person strong — not weak.

6. Karmin’s “Acapella”

Duo Karmin’s “Acapella” is an extraordinarily refreshing break from the traditional sad breakup song.

Karmin (well… mostly lead singer Amy Heidemann) earns the diva title by essentially telling the scrubs she talks about in the song that she is going to be bigger and better without them. Plus, she’s not afraid to tell a guy to exit stage left if he’s not meeting her standards.

7. Phi Phi O’Hara’s “Bitchy”

It doesn’t get much more diva than this. RuPaul’s Drag Race season 4 runner-up Phi Phi O’Hara delivers an anthem that all divas can relate to. No matter who you are, or what you do, someone is always going to have something to say. “Bitchy” addresses this perfectly, telling listeners that as long as you know who you are it doesn’t matter what anyone else has to say. Plus, she gives a shout-out to haters everywhere, delivering a solid helping of truth…if haters are spending their time and breath on you, then you’re doing something right.
