Here, Coldplay indicates everything about a girl and what she interacts with – turns yellow. Like “the stars and how they shine for you and everything you do. At first, I wasn’t sure if there was any “deep meaning” to this song. But with lyrics directly attaching the colours; ie. “Black stripe, yellow paint; I hear they scared of it, but them bros ain’t”, or even more apparent – “Reppin my town when you see me, you know what it is” and the ever-so-humble “Everything I do, I do it big,” it becomes clear Wiz gains the authority to create new traditional connotations for the colours “black and yellow” and make it all about – him. Our next contender mirrors the conventional meaning of this colour more accurately. With lyrics like “Something ugly this way comes” and “I unfurl my flag, my nation helpless,” it’s obvious the colour black here represents the self-destructive depression one person is experiencing – looking on the outside in this chaotic world we live in.

While he may have referred to “black or white” in the literal sense, one of the most iconic performers of our time said it best: “It don’t matter if you’re black or white.” He also sang: “Yes we’re one and the same” and “I’m not going to spend my life being a colour.” Showcasing the issue of racism in his lyrics and an array of famous “black and white” faces in the accompanying video, Michael Jackson got his point across beautifully. Singing her love story as per usual, Taylor Swift embodies the symbolism of the colour “white” in her song “White Horse”. “White” is intended to symbolize an immaculate, utopian yet practically fictitious thing. Love, but in this case, the romanticized idea of love and chivalry. Or what we would consider love is actually “perfect love.” Taylor cries: “I’m not a princess, this ain’t a fairy tale, I’m not the one you’ll sweep off her feet, Lead her up the stairwell. Now it’s too late for you and your white horse to come around.” Here, Taylor shows us she learned the hard way that the ‘white” (perfection) in love doesn’t exist.

It may sound like a silly little dance song that repeats the word “blue” wayyyy too often, but if you listen carefully, Eiffel 65 actually connects how everything and everyone is “blue”.
