How Writing About Your Feelings Will Help You Get Through Your Breakup

By

I recently ended my five-year relationship with my long-distance boyfriend and I’ve been handling my feelings the best way I can. Still, there are moments when I miss him and everything we shared as a couple.

Moving on has been hard for me, but I know it’s best for the both of us in the long run to find happiness within ourselves.

I’ve coped with the recent breakup by following my passion: writing.

Since I was a teenager, writing has been my go-to way to release my emotions, and it’s been the perfect form of creativity to help me through the roller coaster of feelings my breakup brought on.

When you’re learning to handle life after a breakup, you always tend to have a lot of emotion. Your feelings hit you like a ton of bricks, and usually, you want to take them all out on your ex.

But with writing, you can open up a notebook and express your feelings.

It’s a healthier way to let out all the emotions you’re experiencing without hurting anyone, because best of all, no one has to see it.

Writing is also helpful during a breakup because it keeps you productive, so you often can forget about any hard feelings you have. When you write, you’re not only helping yourself heal, but you’re also helping inspire others in similar, difficult situations to stay positive.

Another way writing can help you through your breakup is that it allows you to be free.

Nothing you write is wrong; it’s just your thoughts. When you write for yourself, no one can tell you that you’re not in control of your emotions because you hold the key to your own feelings, and your emotions are valid. Writing helps you cope with losing someone you loved with all your heart.

The best part of writing through your breakup is that you have something to look back on to remind you of the struggles you faced in your past relationships and how you were able to overcome them. You’ll be proud of yourself for handling that time in your life when you were mad at your ex. Then, you’ll realize that you were able to make peace with the breakup by writing and letting go of all your anger and sadness.

Writing about the emotions I’ve experienced after my breakup has helped me heal in ways I never thought possible, and it can help you, too. Writing gives you peace, relaxation and freedom of expression—exactly what you need when you’re experiencing heartbreak. In the most difficult moments after your breakup, writing down your feelings empowers you to take control back from the person who hurt you.
