A Love Letter To My Best Friend’s Unborn Baby

By

Dear Baby S,

You haven’t yet graced us with your presence, but I already know so much about you. I knew you were in there, growing in your mommy’s tummy, before she even told me. I could see it in her face that you were there. She had a twinkle in her eye. (And her boobs were HUGE!)

You see, your mommy is my best friend, and has been since we first struck up a conversation about 90s TV our freshman year in college. She got me. And I got her. We became best friends, hetero-life partners, and just about inseparable. I’ve stood next to her more times than I can remember, on graduation day, on her wedding day.

Ten years later, here we are. Now, here you are.

I know so much about the woman who is to be your mommy: how she has a weak stomach, but a hearty laugh; how she would have picked Aidan over Mr. Big and cries at commercials about TLC shows. I know the moment she fell in love with your daddy, what she was thinking the morning she married him, and how they were so excited to make you theirs.

I know it all. So I wanted to share some of that with you.

Your mommy, my best friend, is – quite simply – the best. Yes, I am biased and someday you will be too. But she is.

She is the kind of person who will pick you up from the airport in the middle of the night, sit there as you cry and hold your hand.

She’ll climb into bed with you when you need to cuddle and she’ll make you oatmeal chocolate chip cookies when you need to veg out.

She’ll send you care packages if you’re ever apart and she’ll text you when she’s thinking about you.

She will sing your favorite song at the top of her lungs and remember lines to your favorite movies.

She will love everyone that you love. She’ll make your enemies hers, and tell you what she would do to get past it, how to forgive them and not waste time having enemies to begin with.

But that’s not to say, she doesn’t have her fair share of faults. We all do.

She likes things to be perfect. She might drive you crazy trying to get you places on time. Be patient with her. She’s just trying to make your life easier, more organized, and…well, perfect.

She can be hard. Both on those she loves, to others, and most frequently, on herself. Make sure you tell her when she’s being too hard on you and help her be easier on herself. She needs the reminder.

You will get mad at her someday when she doesn’t want to let you grow up. Just remember that she’s doing that, and everything, out of love. Just try to love her back, even when she’s driving you mad.

You, kid, have won the parent jackpot. Your daddy is the best and he loves your mom so much. Together, they’ll teach you so much about how to love and grow in the world. Listen to them. And when all else fails and you need another, cooler, adult to listen to. I’ll be there. You can count on me too.

I carry your mommy with me in my heart. And now, I’ll carry you there too.

I cannot wait to meet you.

Love,
Auntie M
