A Stranger’s Random Act Of Kindness Completely Changed This Woman’s Life In The Most Touching Way
When I was younger, my mother used to tell me, “If you can’t say anything nice, then don’t say anything at all.” At the time, I used to find it so annoying — what if I just wanted to complain? What if someone deserved words that weren’t nice? But according to her, there were no exceptions.
Now that I’m older, I think I understand it. After all, why put negativity out into the world when you could replace it with positivity? You never know when someone needs to hear something good. In fact, it could impact them forever.
Writer Ed Solomon was talking with a woman when she explained how a comment from a stranger changed her life for good. And it all started when she was being berated by her mother in pubic.
The other day a woman related a story to me about how her mother had viciously berated her since she was a child. And how one day it was happening in an elevator – in front of others. When the door opened on their floor the mother bolted out but just as SHE started to go.. 1/

.. a stranger – a random person who happened to be there – whispered, “Hey.” And the (then 11 yr old) girl turned back. The stranger said: “It’s not you. It’s her.” And then the elevator door closed. Why do I bring this up? 2/

Because the (now 53 year old) woman told me that at times when life gets really dark, when she hears her (inner) mother’s voice telling that she’s shit, she can’t do it, or to just plain give up.. she then sees that stranger’s face as the door closes in front of her. Nodding. 3/

Sometimes it’s the only thing that keeps her going. The point? If you have a nice thing to say – a word of encouragement, a compliment – even if it’s to a passing stranger.. Don’t hold onto it. Cause you just never know where and when it will land. 4/4

Sometimes when you put positivity into the world, it sticks — but the same goes for negativity. Which is probably why my mother used to always remind me of the age-old adage.
And I guess as an addendum: same goes the opposite when you have something negative to say.

People on Twitter could certainly relate to the story. In fact, a lot of them had similar moments where someone’s words had forever changed their life and the way they saw themselves, and it was what was sorely needed.

My mother was always hyper-critical of my appearance: get your bangs out of your eyes, stop slouching, hold your tummy in. One my day when I was wearing a green skirt and a pink top my 6th grade teacher told me I looked like a lovely flower, that I was always a flower to her.

I love this. I’ve never forgotten the woman who reached out and touched my elbow as I was on the verge of tears, dealing with a tantrumming toddler in the middle of a busy street. ‘You’re doing an amazing job,’ she said. https://t.co/JEq4RerLUt

Honestly, maybe the adage should have this added saying: “and if you have something nice to say, say it, even when you’re afraid to.”
This thread sums up why I always share any genuine compliments that come to mind, even though some people like to dismiss me as a “suck up” for it. You never know how much you can help someone just by sharing the positive thoughts you have about them. https://t.co/j0Yv8kiiuO

While it may seem like we, as people, don’t have a huge impact on the world, we do have a big impact on the people we come across. Maybe we’ll never know the full extent to how we influence the world, but that’s all the more reason to try to change things for the better.
