Acknowledge Your Loneliness (But Don’t Live In It)
By Becca Martin
It feels like nothing will ever ease the empty hole that is seemingly growing quicker than you can maintain in your chest. You feel hallow and you keep trying to swallow the giant lump that never seems to go away in your throat. You try to suck the tears back that are forming in your eyes and wipe them away when they fall faster than anyone can notice. You tell people you’re fine because you can’t bare the thought of explaining what you’re feeling without bursting into a human waterfall. You try to keep in all inside.
You feel so alone you almost don’t even want to be around people because you feel undeserving of attention because you’ve become so used to being on your own. It’s a vicious cycle of self-inflicting pain and torture that you don’t deserve. But the emptiness has begun to consume you and now that’s all you feel, if you feel anything at all.
You feel unimportant and almost as if no one would notice you if you vanished. You spend a lot of time reminiscing on the past, thinking back to all you used to have and wondering where everything went wrong. You wonder why life flipped and everything good went to shit.
But in the heartbroken moments of loneliness where you feel like you don’t matter – realize you do.
When you can’t swallow the lump in your throat, when you can’t catch all the tears streaming down your face and when you can’t find it in yourself to find happiness around you realize nothing is ever as bad as it seems.
Think of all the people who do love you, think of all the people who care about you and all the people who miss you. Think of all the people you’ve impacted and all the people who look up to you.
Reach out to the people who you love, tell them you miss them, tell them they inspire you and that you’ve been thinking about them because you might not even realize that they’re feeling the same biting loneliness you’re experiencing.
Life can get hard; it’s hard for everyone in some way. We’re all fighting our own battles; some of us just do a better job at hiding it than others.
The loneliness you feel, as painful as it might be, is good for you. It’s good for you to get in touch with yourself and your emotions. It’s good for you to become comfortable with your thoughts because you need to learn to rely on yourself because others aren’t always going to be there for you, no matter how much you wish they were. Sometimes you’re going to have to be there for yourself. You have to love yourself first because when the loneliness creeps in and the pain gets too much to bare you have to be there to find your way out. When you’re crying on your bathroom floor you have to be the one to pick yourself up.
When you’re hurting you need to know the best way to cope because someone won’t always be there to help you heal your wounds.
Loneliness is a good reminder that you have to be your own hero. You have to find in deep within yourself to be the person you can turn to when you need someone because you do matter. You do matter to others, but you have to matter to yourself also.
Allow the loneliness to creep in from time to time, but find strength it in and don’t make a home out of the stinging pain. Acknowledge it and find your inner strength to overcome it. You can do it. Swallow the lump, wipe the tears and carry on.
