And Here It Is, The Best Dance Song Of All Time

After months of rumors and teasing and Vine clips and 10 second Saturday Night Live ads and fake versions and anonymous track listings, we now have the first official single from les Daft Punk! Just in time for Record Store Day tomorrow, too. It’s a funky little jam called called “Get Lucky” and it features Pharrell Williams, America’s best-looking 40-year-old. Sonically it sounds a lot like disco if disco were invented in 2013, if that makes any sense. It’s dance music, but it still has some gritty funk to it — which is how dance music got started, anyway. A welcome and refreshing throwback.

It’s impossible to listen to “Get Lucky” and not think about Michael Jackson. Compositionally it already sounds like an MJ joint, like maybe an extra track from MJ’s disco record Off the Wall from 1979. That was the first thing that popped into my head as soon as I heard it. And that’s a good thing, because it takes dance music back to its roots. It’s great news that Daft Punk, who are always looking ahead, this time look backwards to push forward.

“Get Lucky” is the lead single from Daft Punk’s hotly anticipated forthcoming record Random Access Memories, and guess what? It’s having it’s official launch at some kind of cotton festival far, far away in the town of Wee Waa, Australia, which is like 355 miles away from Sydney.

The album drops May 21st. Get your eardrums ready.
