Votes don’t win these elections, swing votes do. The UK and the US have electoral systems which mean the majority of votes don’t count. Yes, really.
And these differences can make us happy. The freedom to break social norms and carve your own path is essential for self-expression. For being able to honestly manifest our personalities as we’d like.
But this ever-speeding movement toward something — utopia, disaster, or individual goal — means we never live at all. The future doesn’t exist. It is always ahead.
We view “I” as synonymous with “self.” All of those traits and predispositions, those wiggles and twists of our personalities. They are us. We see no distinction.
As a teenager, you should be drunk; in your early 20s, recovering from the hangover whilst tackling the stinging realities of work and rent. In your mid 20s, you should be climbing ladders, property, and career, and by the end of your 20s, you better be thinking about children, or it may be too late.
Socializing is normal, being alone is suspect. This makes an emphasis on the latter important. An emphasis on time to yourself, where you have no image to maintain, no part to play. No lies to peddle.
