Be Open To The Path The Universe Presents To You

When I was in high school, the picture was painted like this: go to school, do well at school, go to college, do well at college, go to graduate school, get a job that directly corresponds to the career that you have studied for, and then stick in that career until you retire. Or die. Whichever comes first.

I did that for a bit.

High school, college, graduate school, a career that corresponded directly to the courses I had studied and the degrees that I had achieved. And then…I don’t know exactly what happened. But I felt uneasy. I felt like I was missing something. I felt like there was something more, and that I wasn’t using my talents and my skills in the best way possible.

And so, I changed it up. And everyone around me had a heart attack or two. People still look at me a little cockeyed when I start talking about work. Words like writer, artist, producer, and theatre-maker make a lot of people uncomfortable. They don’t get it, they don’t understand it. Does that weigh a little heavy on my soul sometimes? Sure it does. But then I remind myself that I’m not doing it for them – I’m doing it for me. When I remember that, it doesn’t feel so heavy.

Go on, you try it too. Say it with me, “The path that I set forth on is mine – my life is mine to live, my dreams are mine to chase, the ideas that I have are mine to build.”

Be open to the career paths that the universe presents to you.

When you feel yourself being called to something new, something different, something that sets your soul on fire – do not shy away. I’m not telling you to quit the job you have at the moment, but there’s no harm in following the light of the flame that makes your purpose clear.

No harm in that at all.

Because if you don’t try what you’re called to, how will you ever know what you’re good at?
