Frat Douches Refuse To Pay Hotel $434,000 In Damages After All-Night Rager
In mid-January, Sigma Alpha Mu members from the University of Michigan really tied one on while on a skiing trip at Treetops Resort with the ladies from Sigma Delta Tau. Things went badly for the resort.
The initial damage repair bill was estimated at about $100,000, as quoted by Owens after the Jan.17-18 weekend rampage. About 120 U-M students, members of Sigma Alpha Mu and women from its sister sorority Sigma Delta Tau, had gathered at the ski resort. There was damage to 45 rooms, and students destroyed ceiling tiles and exit signs, broke furniture and doors and urinated on carpeting, pictures showed.
Sigma Alpha Mu was willing to pay the original damage estimate of $100,000 for the damage their members did to Treetops Resort, a spa, ski, and golfing getaway. But now that the original damage estimate has been revised the outcome isn’t so sure despite claiming they would accept all responsibility as posted on their website:
“Our chapter accepts full responsibility for this incident and we will be working with the management of the resort to pay for all damages and cleaning costs.”
Now that the damage estimate has ballooned to nearly a half million dollars, the general manager of Treetops says he’s heard mutterings that the frat might not pay up.
“It also has become evident that the fraternity representatives have suggested that they are unwilling to pay for the damage that they caused the resort,” Owens said in the statement. He could not be reached for further explanation.
Treetops spokeswoman Susan Wilcox Olson said Saturday that Sigma Alpha Mu has paid $25,000 toward restitution but also said a representative has told Treetops that the fraternity is “unwilling to accept liability and pay restitution.”
The University of Michigan has already kicked the frat off of campus for “at least four years” and the ladies of Sigma Delta Tau didn’t get off easy either. U of M has levied a two-year disciplinary suspension on the sorority because members stood “by at Treetops Resort and allowed others to vandalize the facility.”
Apparently none of the frat’s members were available to be interviewed because they’re on Spring Break.
