Girl Is Bitter That She Can’t Pay For College After Blowing Her $90,000 Trust Fund On Vacations And Shopping
By Jacob Geers
“Kim” a rising senior at a University recently called an radio program because she had a big problem: she had managed to spend through a $90,000 college fund that was supposed to last four years in only three. Now she had no way to pay for her last year of University. She told The Bert Show:
Years ago my grandparents set up a college fund for me, which was amazing, and I haven’t been very good with my budget for school. The first payment for my senior year just arrived and I don’t have the money basically. I’ve just been avoiding it. I knew the bill was coming.
The folks on the show were a little confused and asked her where the money had gone.
I used it to budget for school clothes and college break money. I probably should have not done that. I took a trip to Europe.
Oops. The girl was extremely reluctant to talk to her parents about her financial hot mess, but pretty much everyone on the show agreed that it was the only path forward.
She did take their advice, and called back to the show to tell them how it went.
They said there was nothing they could do for me. They’re not being honest with me saying they [can’t help] because my dad has worked for like a million years and they have a retirement account.
And actually tried to turn the blame around her parents.
Maybe they should have taught me to budget or something. They never sat me down and had a real serious talk about it.
And was indignant at the suggestion that she take out a loan:
They suggested I go and take out a loan at the credit union. And I’m like, ‘How am I suppose to do THAT?!’ I have to go inside a bank to get a loan? I can’t even apply for one online.
When one of the show hosts asked whether she could get a job on campus to help pay for school:
No! I didn’t because I’m focused on being a student! I never planned on working through college!
One of the hosts specifically suggested working at the school cafeteria:
That’s embarrassing.
The whole spectacle is extremely frustrating. As a millennial who works three jobs AND takes out loans to pay for college, this person needs to saddle up and enter the real world. Everyone should be entitled to an education, but that doesn’t mean you won’t have to work for it.
