I Hate To Break It To You, But You’re A Feminist
By Aly McHenry
Being a feminist doesn’t mean hating men. I know this, because I am a feminist and I don’t hate men.
But I’ve read the articles stating otherwise. The articles that are titled “This Is Why I Will Never Be a Feminist” and then go on to write about how feminism is man-hating and how feminists get triggered when a man says hello to them. Even though the definition of feminism doesn’t state any of that.
Feminism: the advocacy of women’s rights on the basis of the equality of the sexes.
But still, I know the definition won’t change anyone’s mind, even though it clearly states what feminism is. It won’t even change your mind if you believe in the definition, because you still won’t consider yourself a feminist.
Because one time, you met a woman, and she said that she was a feminist, and she blamed every problem that was going on in the world today, on men, and how we would all be better off without men, and then you decided that you hate feminism.
It’s kind of funny though, because that woman you met, is actually more like you than me. Because she isn’t a feminist either, and I can prove it with another definition.
Misandrist: a person who dislikes, despises, or is strongly prejudiced against men.
But let me guess, I still haven’t changed your mind. That’s okay, because guess what? I’m not trying to. I don’t need to. Because the dictionary proves me right regardless of what you think.
I am a feminist, and it isn’t because I hate men. I am feminist because I support women and men.
I am a feminist because there are women in other countries that are suffering from genital mutilation.
I am a feminist because I never want a woman to be paid less than a man for doing the exact same work.
I am a feminist because I don’t believe that a mother has more of a right to her child than a father does to his.
I am a feminist because I stand against a woman’s body being the subject for ridicule, objectification, and disrespect.
I am a feminist because beauty and body standards for men and women, are ridiculous.
I am a feminist because sexual harassment happens far too frequently and needs to be stopped.
I am a feminist because I will never blame a person for what they wore, or how much they drank that night, when they have been sexually assaulted.
I am a feminist because men are raped and abused too, and they should never feel too ashamed to come forward.
I am feminist because I believe in equality, regardless of your skin color, your gender, your sexual orientation, and your religion.
I am feminist and I don’t hate men, because if I did then I would be a misandrist, and if I hated women, then I would be a misogynist.
But I am a feminist, because I support equality, and if you do too, then I hate to break it to you, but you’re a feminist too.
Scratch that, I actually love to break it to you.
