I Have No Issue With My Hairy Legs And Neither Should You

In my early 20’s, my legs were always shiny and free of hair. After all, I had people to impress, I guess. As time went on, and I became comfortable with my then boyfriend (now husband), I’d become more lax about shaving. He didn’t really care, and I began not to, either.

In my mid 20’s I developed Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and normal, everyday functions became tougher for me. Shaving my legs was definitely not on the top of my list of things to worry about, so I stopped.

One night, while my husband and I were in bed, his leg lovingly touched mine under our covers.

“I thought your fleece pants were in the laundry?” He inquired.

“They are. I’m wearing shorts,” I said.

It was a good laugh as we realized that my legs were so hairy, they actually felt like fleece pants. We still made love, with no weirdness, or grossness about my the status of my leg hair.

One very hot summer, I had plans to go to the beach with my friends. There was no way I’d be able to shave both my legs, and bikini area, so I went to a salon to get waxed.

“We’re going to need more wax in here!!” The lady yelled.

Yes, I was embarrassed but not because I had a lot of hair, but because when I walked out of the waxing room, everyone stared at me.

Society dictates our beauty standards, and so, of course, having hairless legs is the “norm,” but really, what’s more natural than your own hair? Who cares what other people think? I’m not going to base how I live my life because someone, somewhere, at some point decided that women need to groom their legs.

Some religions even ban the shaving of anything on your body. Granted, that’s not my reason behind my hairy leg movement, but at least some people have a free pass in that sense!

I can honestly tell you that I love my hairy legs. The only reason I ever became obsessed with having my legs perfectly sheared was because I fell into the trap of having to do what everyone says is the thing to do.

I challenge you to not shave your legs for a week, and see how you feel. If you feel disgusting, think about why you feel that way? Is it because you feel ashamed, and worried what others will think? If so, you may need to reconsider how you live your life.

Life is short, and worrying about whether or not I can braid my leg hair is a waste of time. Go ahead; go against societal norms. Let’s change the climate together!
