I Left The Corporate World To Work From Home, And You Can Do It Too


It’s what most of us strive for. You know, the nice house, fancy car, six-figure salary, and huge office in one of those sweet sky scrapers we see on T.V. Why else would we spend a thousand years in school fighting for the top spot, best internships, and biggest opportunities?



After I graduated from law school, I was given the opportunity to have one of these jobs. It was everything I always wanted, when I was young, care free, and single that is. But now that I was married with a baby on the way, the 70-hours a week it would take to maintain that lifestyle, the long commutes, traffic, junk lunches, annoying co-workers, and employers who evaluated my cup size over my oral arguments, just weren’t worth it to me.

Don’t get me wrong, I wanted to work, but I wanted to be a full-time mom too and it seemed like I had to choose between two worlds. Like many people who grew up in my generation, there were really only two options modeled to us, staying at home or working, so I didn’t even entertain the possibility that I could do both on my terms. 

I’ve since come to realize that I was wrong.

In today’s age, you can have your cake and eat it too. You can run your own business, start your own organization, or work from a corporation in your living room, on your own schedule, in your sweats (which is always a plus), with your favorite Chinese take-out there to help you do the job.





You Can Have Your Cake And Eat It Too



Let me explain. Although it seems like the laws in our country are getting more restrictive and the job market is closing in, the online world is an open oyster and it has never been easier to market yourself, your products, or the company you work for online.



You can be a blogger and solve a problem for your followers. You can start your own Etsy store and sell whatever your heart desires. You can start your own organization and manage and market it entirely online. You can do your consultations online – over email, Skype, or phone. Your can have a simple business page that points people in the direction of your home-based business. 

Want to be an author? It’s never been easier to self-publish your own book. Want the corporate job? There are numerous corporations looking to hire people working from home – and I’m not talking about becoming an “independent consultant” or an online salesman. I’m talking about legit jobs with legit pay that value you for who you are and what you can bring to the table.

After experiencing both the corporate world and the “working the corporate job from home” world, I’ve come to realize that life is what you make it. If you want it all, you can have it. You just have to settle for being unconventional and thinking outside the box.





Follow Through



So figure out what you want to do, what skills you have to accomplish it, and research ways to make it happen. But don’t just stop there, follow through: 

If you want to write, get serious, find a problem, start a blog, build an audience, and meet a need. If you want to create, envision your online store, develop a name, pick your products, and plug in to blogs and tutorials that can help you accomplish it. 

If you want to work that corporate job, you don’t have to do it in an office. Go to your favorite websites or look up some of the big names and check out their job listings. Even if it doesn’t say it’s a work-from-home job, reach out anyway. Tell them what you want and market yourself because you’ve got a lot to offer them and the rest of the world.

The days of having to choose between the big job and the home are over. You can have both, on your time and your terms, and once you do…you’ll never want to go back.
