Instead Of Focusing On The Bad Things, I Hope You Remember The Small Things

At the end of the day, I hope you know that you’ll be fine. I hope you know that you are fine. I hope you are aware that no matter how long and tough the day has been, you’ll eventually get home.

You’ll finally get to take that long hot bath you’ve been dying to have as you contemplate everything that’s happened during your day.

When that time finally comes, I hope that what you contemplate are the nice things.

I hope you remember that first taste of coffee you had in the morning – how it awakened you, how it made you feel ready to face yet another unpredictable day.

I hope you remember you were at your most positive self as you finished that cup. I hope you remember how you smiled, claiming that this day would be a good day for you, believing it was a good start.

I hope you remember that kid you saw in the park on your way to work, running freely as if life was all about running. I hope you remember that you smiled that time, reminiscing about your own childhood – going back to those times when all you had to think of was where to hide, or how you’d keep that cut you had from your mom because you didn’t want her to get upset or worried. I hope you remember how it made you as giddy as that child.

I hope you remember those random people who greeted you good morning. I hope you remember how you greeted back, and how you exchanged those beautiful, genuine smiles.

I hope you remember the shortest connection you had with all these people and I hope you are aware that you may have made a difference in one of their lives when you decided to smile back. I hope you remember how it made you feel.

I hope you remember those deep conversations you had with your colleagues. I hope you remember how smart and brilliant you were to fearlessly express yourself despite all the disagreements.

I hope you remember how you took each opinion well and not even once judged a single person in the room. I hope you remember how you impressed them – being all vocal, honest, and well-articulated. I hope you remember how it made you feel confident.

I hope you remember that full moon whose beauty was following you on your way home. I hope you noticed how its light never left you. I hope you felt as if you were being guided, protected, appreciated.

I hope you remember how it made you feel safe. And despite that long day you thought you just had to endure like most days, I hope that night was somehow an exception.

I hope that when you contemplate your day, you think about the smallest things. I hope you remember the details most people disregard because they are too focused on how their day went wrong.

I hope you know that the small things also matter – that these small details are simple messages that at the end of the day you are fine – and you will always be.
