It’s Gemini Season Which Means The Gemini Constellation Can NOT Be Seen In The Night Sky
You know your zodiac sign. You probably even know your crush’s zodiac sign. But you might not know the history behind horoscopes.
In technical terms, astrology is defined as, “the divination of the supposed influences of the stars and planets on human affairs and terrestrial events by their positions and aspects.” Basically, that means the positioning of the stars determine what is going to happen.
The next time you see a clear night sky above your head, see if you can spot any of the twelve constellations from the zodiac, half of which are named after animals. After all, zodiac is based on a Latin word (zodiacus) which means “circle of animals.”
If you looked up at the sky tonight, you would think Gemini could be seen clearly since it’s currently Gemini season from May 20th until June 20th — but you would be wrong.
Each zodiac is associated with a constellation that rests along the ecliptic, which is the path of the sun. The Gemini constellation is actually unable to be seen at this time of year, because the sun has been passing through it. Right now, it’s a daytime constellation you would never be able to spot. The best viewing time is actually in February.
From what we can view on Earth, the constellation consists of 85 stars. That sounds pretty big, but in reality it’s only the 30th biggest out of the 88 constellations that exist.
The two brightest stars inside of the Gemini constellation are called Castor and Pollux, which were named after the Great Twins from Babylonian mythology. They also appeared in Greek mythology where they shared the same mother, but Pollux was the son of Zeus.
The story says that Castor was killed in a fight and his brother, who was immortal, chose to share that immortality so they could remain together. Then they were both thrust into the night sky to spend eternity.
Gemini means the twins in Latin. The reason two stars in the constellation were named Castor and Pollux is because they were originally thought to be ‘twins’ that shone with the same strength, but it turns out that Pollux actually shines brighter.
Now that you know a little more about the history of astrology, remember that there is so much beauty in this world and right above it. Don’t forget to stop every once in a while and take a look.
