Rebecca Black Just Came Out With A New Song And It Actually Doesn’t Suck

By

When I hear the name “Rebecca Black,” I still have war flashbacks to my high school days, when I was going through a really weird goth phase and her damn song “Friday” haunted me through the school halls between classes. I don’t know how it happened, but somehow one terribly auto-tuned song and 100 million YouTube views managed to make a star out of her. Sure, people made fun of her, but everyone knew her nonetheless.

It’s been six years and even to this day some of my friends will play the song as a joke (though we don’t get very far into it before we switch to Childish Gambino or Kendrick Lamar). Otherwise, Rebecca Black seemed to succumb to the abyss that most D-list celebrities disappear into eventually.

But would you believe me if I told you she was back? Or, perhaps even more unbelievably, that her new song actually isn’t terrible?

Trust me, I don’t get it either.

Her new single, “Foolish,” fits in pretty well with the dance-pop craze that’s hit the Top 40 recently. And while I’m not saying I’m in love with it, it’s quite a few steps up from her old music (which she made when she was 13, mind you). Let’s just say that if it came on the radio, I probably wouldn’t turn it off. In fact, I might even turn up the volume.

Is Rebecca Black a new pop hero? Well, OK, no. But she doesn’t suck, and I think that’s saying a lot for a girl who literally was only famous because she sucked.

Black will release her EP this summer, and hey, maybe I’ll actually listen to it.
