Sometimes They Don’t Deserve Your Forgiveness
Sometimes forgiving them is the worst mistakes you can make. Sometimes putting yourself in the same exact situation and expecting different results means you are the one in the wrong. Sometimes you cannot stick around, even if you care for a person, even if you are madly in love with that person. You have to filter toxicity from your life. You have to find the strength to remove relationships from your world that are hurting you more than helping you.
Sometimes you cannot choose to take the high road. You cannot forgive someone who is not sorry for what they put you through. You cannot tell them it’s okay because it will only encourage them to repeat their bad behavior.
Even though your love of helping others, of fixing others, might urge you to offer your forgiveness without a second thought, you cannot act rashly. You have to think this through. You have to weigh the pros and cons of accepting their apologies because sometimes they do not deserve a second chance. Sometimes they need to learn their actions have consequences. Sometimes the best thing you can do for their growth is step aside.
Even though the hardest thing to do is walk away from someone you have history with, sometimes they don’t deserve your forgiveness. They don’t deserve your sympathy. They don’t deserve your kindness. No amount of groveling at your feet can make up for the choices they consciously made. No amount of excuses can distract you from the fact they did the wrong thing.
Sometimes you have to walk away before they hurt you even worse. Sometimes you have to put your happiness in front of theirs. Sometimes you have to leave because staying will only prolong the pain. You might not think they deserve to be abandoned — but do you deserve the treatment they have given you? Do you deserve the treatment they will continue to give you if you choose to stay?
Sometimes you have to listen to your head over your heart. Sometimes you have to ignore the guilt, ignore the regret, ignore the temptation to let them get away with all of the hurtful things they have put you through. You have to stop yourself from texting them. You have to stop yourself from reaching out to them.
Sometimes they don’t deserve your forgiveness. They don’t deserve a hug from you and reassurance everything is okay. They don’t deserve to feel better about themselves when they have only made you feel worse. You cannot keep offering your heart to the same people who crush yours into the mud.
Sometimes the people you love more than anything, the people you cannot imagine spending a day without, belong buried in your past. Sometimes you are going to have to say goodbye, even though it will hurt you as much as it hurts them. Sometimes the right thing to do is the hardest thing to do.
Sometimes, they don’t deserve your forgiveness. And sometimes, that realization sucks.
