Surround Yourself With Empowering Friendships And Watch Your Whole World Change
By Liz Newman
We invest a lot of time in our friendships, so it can be very difficult to see which ones are positive and which ones are toxic. Sometimes, we are blinded by how long we’ve known someone or how the relationship used to be. We let that be an excuse for longer than it should be to stay in contact with that person when it’s actually turned into a very unhealthy dynamic.
But, one of the most important things we can do as we get older is to differentiate between the relationships that make us better and the ones that drain us of all of our energy. Because as we grow up, we are going to grow apart from some people. Life will take us in different directions and some people won’t have the common ground with one another that they once had.
And, that’s okay. It’s all just part of it. We can appreciate a friendship for what it was while not feeling obligated to maintain it if it has become a bad environment. Along those same lines, we can start to realize which friendships have endured hardships and growing pains so we can continue to nurture them.
Because our friendships are such an important part of our overall happiness.
They can be a source of inspiration and empowerment at their best or a pool of resentment and negativity at their worst. That’s why it is so important that we take control and decide who we give our energy to and who we let into our world.
When you start to nurture the right friendships, you’ll notice the changes that follow. The right friendships will build you up and make you believe in yourself. The right friendships won’t be intimidated by your success and they won’t want to leave when you fail. The right friendships are constants, even with the highs and lows of life.
And, these kinds of friendships make life so much better. They don’t keep score on your past mistakes, they understand when life gets busy, and they welcome you no matter how long it’s been since you’ve seen each other.
As we grow up, these are the kinds of friendships that we need to hold out for and hang on to. The friendships we can always count on no matter how much time has passed.
So, cheers to the empowering friendships out there. The ones who find a way to make you feel valued and loved despite time, distance, and major milestones. The ones who nurture the fire within you and have never felt the need to smother your light to fan their own flame. The ones who know the secret to success and happiness is that we can all get there together.
