The Skin You Are In
By Nikita Gill
No matter what beauty brands try to tell you. No matter what the world’s toxic rhetoric is. No matter the people who approach you and tell you about all the lightening creams you can buy. No matter how often you need to hear about lines like “White is Purity” and feel suffocated by all the fairness creams around you. Just remember, your skin is absolutely beautiful. You are exquisite.
The thing is your skin is used to house you, your impeccable soul. And it is the purest thing ever created. Your outer shell does not matter, as much as what is inside you. We tell our children this even as they go out into the world and face constantly being told their outsides are somehow wrong. They have imperfections they need to hide. Somehow their pure hearts aren’t as important as their outer shells and no matter how much self love we teach them, the world wide messages sent out by massive companies convinces them of the opposite.
If you find yourself losing the battle, insecure, thinking your skin is not beautiful, imagining you somehow need to change: DO NOT. Don’t allow yourself to be convinced that your body, the way you wear your skin is somehow flawed. The world needs to change it’s rhetoric to be more inclusive. You do not have to change yourself.
The skin that you are in is beautiful. You don’t have to be lighter. You don’t have to be darker. You don’t have to lose your scars. You don’t need to hide your stretch marks. You don’t need to wear make up unless you like it. There is no addendum or asterisk to that statement. The skin you are in is beautiful. Period. End of.
