This is How To Find Your Purpose Through Loving Yourself
By Erin Gaw
Why do we limit ourselves? Why do we think we’re not good enough? Why don’t we ever take that leap of faith?
Just like in psychology, I believe it’s a nature and nurture thing. We need to believe in ourselves and we must nurture and bring out the skills and talents that we possess. The other half? The nature? It comes from our community and our peers. And more often than not, we bring other people down. We criticize them when we’re supposed to be supporting. We spread hate instead of accepting and loving one another. We pull the other one down when they look and speak different.
Well, you know what? I’m done standing by the sideline. I am marching front and center; this is my protest. This is my encouragement to you to find your purpose, to nurture it, to stand up for yourself and to shine. You know what follows when you do? Only love and happiness in a form you never thought was possible for yourself and for others.
But first, how do you find purpose?
Ask yourself: who are you? What are your passions? What identity do you have for yourself? Do you love animals so much you want to save their habitats? Does your heart skip a beat when you’re in live theater, comedy bar or play? Have you been playing an instrument since you were young? Have you been looking at the stars and wondering what’s out there this entire time? Does your heart pour out for those in need? Do you love making people feel special and beautiful in the important days of their lives? Are you curious of the workings and possibilities of the human psyche and body? Or are you still trying to figure it all out? Whatever it is, it all starts with answering the question, “Who am I?”
When you’ve determined that for yourself, ask next, “What is my dream?” Does it look like living on the top floor that has the view of the mountains in your city? Is it dedicating your life to the future of medicine? Is it to travel the world and see animals in their natural habitat? Does your dream look like running your own business or working for a non-profit organization to make an impact in society? Or is it simply being happy in a job that you love? Now that you see what your dream is, work towards it.
You work towards your dream by setting up goals. What steps do you need to take to fulfill your dream? How long will it take? Just remember: it will take time. You will face failure and you will face delay, and just like everything else in life, you just need to be patient, believe in it, and keep going on. Perseverance, determination, and belief are what you need under your belt on your way to your dream. Experience life, learn from your mistakes, be resilient and don’t be afraid to take risks.
Along the way to your dream, I hope you don’t forget about self-love. You will bump into a lot of other things on your way – mistakes, loss, heartbreak, misunderstandings, a change in mind. I hope you choose to remain kind and to keep standing up. You are in control of your life even in moments when it doesn’t seem like it. You can change your circumstance, you can be positive, you can heal, and you can be happy. I hope you find acts of love for yourself. When you love yourself, the rest will follow, I promise you. You are deserving of your dream and of happiness; it will come.
Your dream is more than just a desirable destination; it is a journey towards a purpose in life. It can only fill you with the purest form of happiness, contentment, and fulfillment. It is the greatest adventure you can go on and let me tell you, with every step you make towards it, with every goal you accomplish, there will be something you can always be proud of. So, what better time to start than now? Let’s do it. I believe in you.
