This Is How To Forget What You Thought Your Life Would Be Like, And Just Live

Put down the blueprint and just go with it.

I am a planner. I write lists, I plan weeks in advance, I’m what you call a Type A personality, and if anything goes off balance at the last minute it sends me into a bit of a frenzy.

I want to do everything on time, follow my schedule to a T and make sure everything is perfect (whatever that is in my eyes). But with this attitude, I’ve set myself up for disaster upon disaster, because life is all about trial and error. It’s about learning, growing and embracing the messy journey and that’s why I decided to give up the blueprint (well, sort of) and just go with it.

Forget the timeline and just live.

We’re bought up in a society where we’re expected to do everything to a timeline. You go to school, go to university, get a grown-up job, find a partner, get married and have children pretty much by the time you’re 30. And this kind of pressure brings on panic and doubt that you’re not doing so great at life because all your friends are on this path living their perfect adult life and you’re watching Netflix and eating pizza in your underwear (which is completely acceptable and is highly encouraged).

There isn’t a blueprint. If you keep looking at what others are doing then you’ll feel like you’re failing rather than seeing every moment as an opportunity. There is no right or wrong path, remember that.

Turn one day into today.

We all have dreams, goals and aspirations that we want to ‘one day’ achieve, but when is this day? If you were to die tomorrow, would you be satisfied with the life you’ve lived or would you wonder why you didn’t go travelling for six months, ask that boy/girl out or go shark diving in the Caribbean?

Procrastination is our worst enemy and we’re always thinking of excuses about why we can’t do something, right now. We make these excuses because we’re scared, scared of getting out of our comfort zones, scared of failing.

Use your energy on what sets your soul on fire and take baby steps in until you get there. Trust me, the unknown isn’t as scary as you think.

Ask for help.

I used to feel that if I asked for help that would mean that I’m weak and incapable. But then one day I put my ego aside and asked a friend for help and it was the best decision I made because I got the advice and support I needed and in no way did I feel shame or defeated.
Asking loads of questions is good. Be inquisitive and reach out to people because speaking out is better than being silent. Who knows what you might learn.

Who cares if you don’t have it figured out? Just go with the flow and enjoy every step. Life is about the journey, not the destination so embrace the messiness.
