This Truly Touching Letter A Sheriff’s Deputy Wrote To The Girl Who Stole His Bike Is Super Heartwarming
If you’ve ever found yourself in a situation where you’re out at night and not sure how to get home, you might relate to this Virginia bike thief. The girl stole a sheriff’s deputy’s bike on the night of the Super Bowl, but not for the reason most people would think.
Josh Bowden didn’t realize his bike had been stolen until it appeared in his yard again, this time with a note from the girl, who called herself “M.”
“I want to sincerely apologize for taking your bike the night of the Super Bowl,” M wrote. “I had to walk from Radford to Blacksburg at 2 a.m. because of drunk boys, a dead phone and no money/rides in Radford.”
She explained that she never intended to steal the bike, merely to borrow it, and hoped the officer would understand.
Luckily, Bowden was sympathetic. He shared the letter on his Facebook and included a piece of advice for the girl.
“I’m glad my bike was of help to you, however, I would like to make some suggestions because I hope my daughter never finds herself in that situation,” he wrote. “You may want to find new friends to hang out with, not ‘boys’ who have no concern with your well being.”
He also named off a few young women who had disappeared after being out on there own, and warned her about putting herself in a similar situation without protection.
“Although I am not mad at you for taking my bike with flat tires to make yourself feel a little safer, I would much rather you have knocked on my door and asked me for help,” he wrote.
He hoped M would see the post on Facebook and heed his lecture.
Hopefully we can all learn something from Bowden’s letter, because, unfortunately, we aren’t all going to find a conveniently-placed bike that belongs to someone quite as forgiving.
