To My Forever Person, This Is What I Hope For You

We may have already met, at a cafe one fine afternoon or at a bookstore obsessing over the same novel, or we may have passed by each other at the street or we may have known each other for a very long time. Or maybe, we didn’t have a chance to meet. Yet.

The thing is, I’m not worried.

I know we’re gonna end up together anyway. I’ll be spending the rest of my eternity with you. So what’s the rush?

What I’m saying is, I want us to grow separately as individuals. For now.

We’re very young. I want us to enjoy our singlehood and youth with no commitments. No strings attached whatsoever. So for the time being,

I want you to reach your dreams and goals in life. Do whatever it takes to get what you want, just as long as you don’t step on other people along the way. Stand on your own. Be ambitious. Be bold. Be fearless. Be free.

I want you to be passionate. There’s nothing sexier than a man doing something he loves to do. So I want you to do what it is you were born to do.

I want you to have a thirst for learning. Always learn new things. I want you to know that the world has so much more to offer and you shouldn’t confine yourself in what you already know.

I want you to explore. Explore yourself, explore others. I want you to be open-minded. I want you to understand yourself and understand other people.

I want you to understand that each individual is unique in his/her own. Don’t judge someone based solely on what you see. Always give people the benefit of the doubt. Human beings are innately good. I want you to always see the goodness in others. But I also want you to leave room for doubt. Human beings are good, but they are capable of doing evil.

I want you to be gentle. Be kind. Be polite. I want you to treat life pleasantly and welcome problems and adversaries like an old friend. I want you to know how to deal with your own shit and not burden other people with it. I want you to know that making harsh decisions while your emotions are heightened won’t do you any good.

I want you to love women. Love your Mom, your Grandma, your sisters, your girl friends. I want you to show them the kind of respect they deserve. Care for them. And let them care for you. Protect them. But know that they can protect themselves also. Let them see how strong they truly are. Far stronger than they believe to be. Support them. Treat them right. How you treat them now is how you’ll treat me in the future.

I want you to know the true meaning of beauty. That real beauty cannot be seen by the eyes but by the heart. I want you to realize that being beautiful is not about looking good. It’s about feeling good and making others feel good.

I want you to travel. Go to different places. Meet different people. Learn from them. So when we meet again, we’ll know which places we’re going to revisit. Together. And it’ll be a totally different experience.

I want you to date other girls. A lot of girls. With different personalities, background, beliefs and ethnicity. Date beautiful girls. Intelligent girls. So when we finally end up together, I won’t think that you settled with me cause I’m the only woman you’ve ever loved. No. When we end up together, I want it to be because out of all these women you’ve been with, you choose me.

I want you to be happy. Happiness is a choice you make everyday. Despite whatever it is you go through, be happy. And share that happiness with other people. Happiness is one of the best gifts you can ever give.

I want you to believe in yourself. Be confident. Know that you can do anything. Nothing is impossible. Things may be hard now, but always remember that “hard” is different from “impossible” and even the word impossible has “possible” in it.

I want you to be yourself and love yourself for it. Be the kind of man I can be proud of. The kind of man I can introduce to my parents and whole family to. Be the kind of man you’ve always dreamed of becoming, without losing who you truly are.

Most of all, I want you to be ready.

I want you to prepare yourself to love me. Cause when I finally ask you that question, I won’t settle for an “I don’t know” or a “Maybe.” Cause I don’t deserve that answer. What I want from you is a “Yes. I am sure. Definitely.”

That’s why, I want you to do whatever you need to do now. Be whatever you want to be now. So when the time comes, you’ll be ready. Ready to love me truly, completely, eternally and unconditionally.
