To The Person Who Laughed At Someone Who Lost The Battle Against Depression
By Joyce Fugnit
To the person who laughed at someone who lost the battle against depression,
In case you didn’t know, you are mocking somebody else’s pain. You are mocking someone’s sibling — a sibling that they dearly love. You are laughing at the unwanted death of someone’s daughter, of someone’s son — a child that’s loved and cared for. You are laughing at someone’s best friend — a sweet friend who’s been missed for years.
You are laughing at someone who spent almost all the years in their lives feeling like a burden just because of something they didn’t wish to have. You are laughing at someone who spent their entire existence afraid to seek help and open up about their illness. You are laughing at someone who chose to leave everyone they love because of the people who lack empathy and are just plain assholes — like you.
You are laughing at someone who chose to end their lives because of fear, of pain, and of hopelessness that this cruel world offers. You are laughing at someone who considered death as their only way and only chance to feel the serenity that this life had promised. You are laughing at someone that society has failed.
In case you didn’t know, you are the most insensitive and pathetic person on earth. The thought of you is making my stomach turn. The thought of your callous comment is making my heart pound angrily out of my chest and punch you.
How could you laugh at someone’s struggle? How could you make fun of someone’s death? How could you take depression — and other mental illnesses — as a joke? How could you? Haven’t you had enough love in your life that you take something serious and something heartbreaking as a laughing matter?
In case you didn’t know, depression is not something anybody wants to experience. They do not choose depression. Depression chooses them. I may be enraged by you, but I would never wish for you to experience it just so you could understand why what you did is wrong and hurtful and unacceptable. I would never wish for your love ones to have it just so you could understand grief, mourning, and regret.
If you were a person who cares, who sympathized, who knew how to love, you wouldn’t laugh at someone who lost the battle against depression and or call them weak and foolish. But unfortunately you did. And instead of feeling a bit sorry for your actions, you acted like the egoistic person that you already are.
For that, my middle finger would love to salute you — your insensitivity and your stupidity. May you find inner peace and clarity.
