What I’m Really Saying When I Say ‘I Love You’
Arguably the three most important words in the english language, “I love you”s are given out left and right without thought or care to people who rarely deserve or recognize the significance of these words. “I love you”s are thrown over shoulders to friends in the hallway at school or drunkenly spilling off our tongues to lovers like the liquid courage that was poured into our mouthes to get the words there in the first place. Perhaps I am old fashioned but I still think these words are heavy and their weight is too great to be through around casually. They mean more than just a feeling or sentiment of lust or admiration. Their sanctity lies in the fact that an “I love you” is a statement of an infinite feeling, ever changing but constant. When I say “I love you”, listen carefully because what I’m really saying is so much more.
What I’m really saying when I say “I love you” is that I accept you for who you are, totally and completely. That I see every crack and crease in your body and mind and I see beauty in your flaws. What I’m saying is I never want you to change. You are important and you matter just the way you are.
What I’m really saying when I say “I love you” is that you inspire me. You inspire me to be better, you inspire me to try new things, to speak my mind and to be fearless, because if someone as amazing as you can love me than I should love me too.
What I’m really saying when I say “I love you” is that I want you in my life, always and forever. That my feelings will never change and I am certain of that. More certain than I am of anything else in my life, I can not be me without you.
What I’m really saying when I say “I love you” is that you already changed my life. I can see the imprint you left in my soul when I close my eyes. It’s already there and like a scar it will be there forever and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
What I’m really saying when I say “I love you” is that I am yours completely and I always will be. I have given you my heart and I trust you to take care of it, protect it and keep it safe forever and I will do the same for you.
What I’m really saying when I say “I love you” is that I’m so proud to be yours. I love showing you off to everyone I meet because I am somehow better with you by my side. I’m also proud of what we have together and I never want to hide that.
What I’m really saying when I say “I love you” is that your problems and your hurt are my privilege. Your life is part of my life and we share our success and loses. I recognize the significance of that task and I thank you for letting me in to share your life completely with you.
What I’m really saying when I say “I love you” is that I hope you love me too. I hope you see me for who I really am, that you don’t mind all my flaws, that you are proud of the person I am, that you want me and need me in your life and that I have changed your life too.
