Why You Should Be Proud To Be ‘Just A Mum’

By

What do you do for work?

I’m just a mum.

What are your hobbies?

Being a mum.

What do you like doing in your spare time?

Just mothering like a mum.

So what if your hobbies include laundry and food shopping? So what if you thrive off being a mum? So what if your day is filled with wiping small butts, being yelled at by knee-height humans and so what if you don’t mind? So what if you’re just a mum?

I’m just a mum and I’m proud to be. Being a mother is hard work. Being a mother is long hours always unpaid. Being a mother is challenging, exhausting and overwhelming. Being a mother is caring, loving and exciting. From first words to riding a bike, being just as mum is all about being in the moment. It can be as exciting as explaining to your toddler that you’re not in fact wearing matching nappies and that mummy has her own nappies. Special nappies (ugh) aren’t I lucky. It could be yelling at your toddler to stop feeding the baby dog biscuits [seriously.]

Do you often feel like you’re living ground hog day?! Me too. Because we’re just being mothers and sometimes mothering is excruciatingly boring. It’s routine. It’s fricken tiring and sometimes under appreciated. Its loudness is often deafening from crying, tantrums or laughter.

Do you often feel like you’re rocking the mum look? Meh…. I don’t even know what it is. Is it wiping your day 2 mascara eyes just so you can get another day out of it? Is it adding another bobby pin to your mum bun? Is it wearing what you wore to bed for a full 24 hours? I don’t know but I’m okay with it.

You see being just a mum is the worlds most under qualified job. I don’t think I’m qualified enough to be an adult some days let alone be responsible for a miniature human being. Someday’s I’m looking for a more adulter adult just to tell me what to do. I’ve googled more than you’ll ever know. I’ve double guessed myself more than I’d like to admit. And I think it’s normal.

So be proud. Be just a mum and give it the best you’ve got. If today was shit don’t worry tomorrow may be better. Kids easily forgive shitty parenting. You’re harder on yourself than they’ll ever be on you.
