Why Your Twenties Are Actually The Best Years Of Your Life
By Melisa Ergin
People constantly talk about how exhausting being in your twenties can be. You’re at the beginning of your career, all your friends are spread across the world, your relationship status is changing every month, and you feel like your life is filled with absolute chaos. And it is. Except, why do we view this chaos as a bad thing? In your twenties, everything is unknown and filled with uncertainty. But this isn’t bad, it’s great.
I love being in my twenties. Nothing about my life is for sure, and things could change overnight, but I love the uncertainty of it all. I love the idea that I could be living in a different country next month, or falling in love tomorrow.
Your twenties are full of adventure. They’re a time where you are still figuring out what you want and who you want to be, and growing into the person you are meant to be.
Yes, your timeline is constantly being flooded with engagement announcements and pregnancy news. But just because your friends have made that choice doesn’t mean that you have to. Your twenties are full of choices. If you want to have children, you can. If you want to get married, go ahead. But if you don’t want to do any of these things, you don’t have to.
In your twenties, you have the ability make all your decisions for yourself, with no one else in mind.
You’re not tied down with the responsibilities that you will have once you’re 30. You have time to take the wrong job and quit when you realise you hate it. You can afford to go on a few (or many) horrible Tinder dates before realising that maybe online dating isn’t for you. You can plan spur of the moment trips with your friends for the weekend, or decide to travel the world on your own. Because when it comes down to it, your twenties are all about you. And you can be as selfish as you want.
During your twenties you’ll learn who your real friends are. You aren’t in college anymore, and all your friends don’t live right around the corner. This may seem like a bad thing but it will show you which friendships can last and which ones can’t. Your best friendships will be formed during your twenties because they will be the ones full of meaning and genuine love.
In your twenties, you have room to screw up. You can take risks, and it’s okay if everything doesn’t go exactly as planned. You have the room and the time for error and mistakes. No one expects you to be completely stable. The same won’t be said later in life.
Yes, your twenties are weird, but it’s that weirdness that makes them amazing. It’s the highs and lows that make them great. Your twenties can be full of whatever you want them to be. You’re growing into who you are as a person, and there will be bumps and hurdles along the way, but those obstacles are what make your twenties the most exciting years of your life.
So stop complaining about your twenties, and go outside and start living them. Enjoy the chaos. Appreciate the adventure. Because you only get one shot at them, and they’ll be over sooner than you know.
