You Get To Choose Who You Become
By Amy Horton
The power of choice.
Is it something you embrace or avoid?
The idea of choice seems exciting, but it can also feel terrifying to know that you truly are the creator of your own life. If you are not used to coming from a mindset of empowerment, you won’t know how to feel joy at the idea that you control your destiny. It might be frightening or overwhelming instead. If you were taught when you were young—or even more recently—that you should not love or trust yourself, then being in charge of your own decisions doesn’t feel good.
So yes, you get to choose who you are, but first you’ve got to learn to embrace yourself as you are. That’s the toughest part for many people, still stuck in past trauma and firmly entrenched in outdated patterns. If it feels impossible to enjoy and accept exactly who you are now, you won’t be able to build the future you envision. There is no future without a commitment to the here and now.
As one of my mentors always says, fear is excitement turned up too loud. When you suffer from excessive anxiety, you likely have an imbalanced nervous system that needs to be brought back into regulation. That is not easy work, but it’ll change your life, seriously. There are people out there who can help you—there are more resources in today’s world than ever before. Take advantage. Start to learn about your trauma and how it’s still affecting you every single day of your life so that you can move forward and into who you are truly meant to be.
You are amazing and precious. You truly are. Now you just have to learn how to believe in that, and in yourself. That’s the secret, to nourish your own love and compassion for yourself and your journey. You are worthy. You are enough. I know that it often doesn’t feel that way, because you are stuck in the stories that live in your head. They are the lies that envelop and suffocate the truth underneath—your inner knowing that perhaps you’ve been disconnected from for most of your life.
Creating the reality that you want can feel overwhelming, yes, but knowing that you are not actually trapped and stuck unless you choose to be will change your life. I know because I was there too. I thought I would never be able to shift or choose anything for myself. I was living prey to the whims of circumstance and fate. All the while my body and intuition were waiting patiently for me to reconnect, to listen, to understand how to trust and release.
Life is fleeting and beautiful. Spend it living where you are, not in the past or in the future. It’s the only way to listen in and understand what you need, moment to moment, so that you can build from there. It’s honestly that simple, but also probably the most difficult shift you will ever make. When you aren’t used to living this way, the concept sounds completely foreign.
I encourage you to try. It’s not easy, but it changes everything. Why cling on so tightly when it isn’t serving you? If that method was going to work, it would’ve by now. Why are you still beating your head against a wall that will never break down? Breathe, trust, release. Simple concept, difficult to implement, I know—but you are capable.
Get excited, my friend. You have the power of choice! What a beautiful thing! It’s so lovely when you finally release and trust that the universe will support you, because as soon as you let go, it gives you exactly what you need. That may not always look like what you anticipate, but you can trust that it is always in your best interest and working in your favor.
You get to choose who you are. Amazing stuff. Make sure that your life is one that gives you joy and fulfills you. This isn’t a trial run, it’s the real thing. Do you really want to let it pass you by and then look back with regret? I know you don’t. It’s time to start living your truth.
