Your Sadness Isn’t A Weakness


Your sadness isn’t a weakness. There’s strength in your vulnerability. You should be proud of yourself for being honest about your emotions because most people push uncomfortable feelings away. Most people wouldn’t recognize that they have a problem — and that they need to take action to fix that problem.

In a complex way, your sadness is partially a blessing, because it’s an indicator something needs to change. It’s a wakeup call. It’s a warning that if you keep going on the way you’ve been going, you’re going to end up with a life that makes you miserable.

Your sadness might make it difficult for you to rise from bed in the morning, let alone reach out for the help you need, but the first step is admitting you want change. You want to be happy again. You want to put in the effort.

You shouldn’t feel ashamed of your sadness because it isn’t going to push the right people away. The right people are going to help you overcome your difficulties. They’re going to be there for you when times are tough. They’re going to make sure you know you’re not alone.

There are always going to be people who have a hard time understanding your sadness. They might think you’re lazy for spending so many hours in bed each day. They might think you’re a downer for staying home when you could be going to parties with them and having fun. These people might be misguided — or they might be a negative presence in your life and you might have to say goodbye to them for the good of your own mental health.

You shouldn’t be ashamed of your sadness, you shouldn’t feel like you’re alone in your pain, because most people aren’t willing to air their worst emotions out in the open. Most people cry in private. They don’t post about getting into a fight with their boyfriend on social media. They don’t give details about their latest panic attack at the water cooler at work.

Even though you feel like you’re the only one you know who is going through hell, there are probably people around you who are suffering in silence. You don’t have to tell them about your pain if it makes you uncomfortable — but you should remind yourself you’re not the only one going through that pain. You’re not as alone as your sadness makes you feel.

No matter how much you’re struggling, you have to remember your sadness isn’t going to last forever. Right now, you might feel like nothing is going to get better. You might feel like you’re always going to feel this empty. You might feel completely hopeless, powerless, clueless — but you can take action. You can go to therapy. You can get help. You can learn how to cope with your emotions in a healthier way. You can learn how to transform your fake smiles into real ones.

Your sadness sucks — but you can get through this. You can experience happiness again soon.
