You’re Allowed To Be A Pessimist Sometimes
You don’t always have to see the best in a situation. You don’t always have to be thankful for the lessons that you learned when going through a hard time. You don’t always have to act like an optimist, like nothing bothers you, like you can handle anything life throws at you.
There are moments when positivity isn’t going to help you. In fact, positivity might even annoy you. It might be the last thing you want to hear. You might want to rant, to complain, to sulk in your misery. And as long as your sadness doesn’t last forever, that is okay.
You’re allowed to be a pessimist sometimes. You’re allowed to be in a bad mood when bad things happen to you. You’re allowed to feel sorry for yourself. You’re allowed to complain about how unfair things are. You’re allowed to feel like you’ve gotten screwed over.
Sometimes, you need a little bit of distance from a situation before you can look back on it and laugh. Sometimes, you need to cry about what’s happened to you in order to get over what’s happened to you. Sometimes, your misery is a stepping stone toward acceptance.
You should never let anyone convince you that you don’t have a right to feel a certain way. Even if other people have it worse, you’re allowed to be sad when something in your life goes wrong. You’re allowed to be pissed off. You’re allowed to be disappointed. You’re allowed to have an opinion.
Even the happiest people in the world, the people who see the good in everyone and spread positivity everywhere they go, are going to be upset sometimes. They are going to curse and cry and complain. It’s only human. Your emotions aren’t invalid, simply because things are going to work out in the end. You’re allowed to feel the way you feel today, even if you know you might get over this by tomorrow.
Of course, you don’t want to mope around forever. You don’t want to assume the world is out to get you and that nothing in your life is ever going to go right. You don’t want to let your misery continue for too long. You don’t want to get accustomed to your pessimism.
But for at least a little while, you’re allowed to complain about whatever is bothering you. You’re allowed to be emotional. You’re allowed to express your real feelings, instead of pretending everything is okay when it’s not.
You don’t have to see the silver lining right now. You don’t have to fake smiles. You don’t have to pretend you’re completely calm and have things under control when you’re spiraling on the inside.
You are allowed to be sad when sad things happen to you. You are allowed to care.
Maybe one day in the future you’ll be able to look back at this period and see the good in it, but if all you see right now is bad, that is perfectly fine. You’re going to be okay tomorrow, but right now, you’re allowed to not be okay.
