It looks terrible, and it was, but it could have been far worse had the pilot of TransAsia flight GE235 not managed to steer the plane into water. So far at least twenty-three are dead, fifteen have been rescued, and twenty are still missing after the flight went down into Taipei’s Keelung River.

The twin-engine propeller plane carrying 58 people crashed shortly after takeoff from Taipei Airport, en route to Kinmen Island, with 53 passengers and five crew, the state-run Central News Agency reported.

Footage taken by a motorist appears to show the wing of the stricken plane clipping a taxi and slamming through the wall of a motorway before crashing into the Keelung River in Taipei.
