Western Civilization Has Replaced the Post Apocalyptic Sci-Fi Genre: August
There’s a new bill in the US Senate called the Food Safety Modernization Act of 2010 which, if passed, will prohibit the public from growing its own food. Here’s what a Canadian from what seems to be a relevant organization said:
If accepted [S 510] would preclude the public’s right to grow, own, trade, transport, share, feed and eat each and every food that nature makes. It will become the most offensive authority against the cultivation, trade and consumption of food and agricultural products of one’s choice. It will be unconstitutional and contrary to natural law or, if you like, the will of God.
Oh, sweet. All food produced within US borders is going to be under government control. All food. And, in the case of ‘contamination’ or ’emergency,’ all US food and US farms fall under Homeland Security and the Department of Defense, which had as its last secretary Donald Rumsfeld, who seemed totally evil. The proposed bill, if passed, will also prohibit the public from cleaning and storing their own seeds.
The sweetest part of this bill, though, is that former vice president of Monsanto Michael Taylor wrote it, but “Monsanto says it has no interest in the bill and would not benefit from it.” Lol. Jesus christ. This article, which may or may not be written by complete crazies, surmises that Taylor has been the unofficial Food Czar to the FDA for awhile and hopes to administer the agency the bill would create if it passes.
Kind of seems like Monsanto wants to control all US seed, food and farming. Wouldn’t be that surprising. After all, Monsanto was the first to patent a living organism.
On the other hand, other websites, such as the Atlantic, reporting on the Food Safety Bill don’t sound so worried.
In lighter news, Wired.com recently reported that scientists have discovered a link between dimensions. Yeah. From the article: “The qualities of a high-temperature superconductor — a compound in which electrons obey the spooky laws of quantum physics, and flow in perfect synchrony, without friction — appear linked to the fractal arrangements of seemingly random oxygen atoms… The findings, published Aug. 12 in Nature, are a physics equivalent of discovering a link between two utterly separate dimensions.” Seems almost terrifying. And totally confusing.
I dunno. I’m starting to feel paranoid that world is becoming so dense and complicated and beyond our reach that the apocalypse is going to happen in a series of weird, bleak events.
Anyways, here’s a picture of Koko, the gorilla that does sign language, in which I imagine her making a ‘Chewbacca-like sound’ (via ‘KokoPix’).
