Graphic Uses Facebook Status Updates to Show When People Are Most Likely to Break Up

Using a sample of 10,000 Facebook users’ status updates containing the words “break up” or “broken up,” David McCandless has found that Facebook users are most likely to break up around spring break and the weeks before Christmas.

Of interest is Christmas Day, on which the lowest number of break-ups supposedly occur. Also notice the mini-spikes in break-ups on Mondays (shitty weekend?).

Another trend of note is the rise in break-ups over the early part of summer followed by the relatively sudden period of calm from August to September. Perhaps in early summer we break up, and it takes us a month or so to find a new mate to hook up with.

McCandless first unveiled this graph at a TED talk in August.
