I Want To Get To Know You
By Amy McDonald
I want to know you — all of you.
I want to know the small external details like your favorite color, what aftershave you wear, your favorite shirt and your football team. I want to know why they’re your favorite — what it is about them that stirs something in you. I want to know all the movies you’ve ever seen, songs you’ve heard and books you read and know what they meant to you, what they did to you. I want to know whether you turn to music to reflect your emotions, or whether you’re the kind to get lost in a book or in a movie, or whether it’s the gym or the park or the bar which is your sanctuary.
I want to know the internal things too, like what brings that small hint of a smile to your lips, what makes your heart beat a thousand miles per hour, what makes you sad and what makes you laugh uncontrollably. I want to know your mind and what you’re thinking when you close your eyes and inhale deeply. I want to know what you daydream about and where your thoughts lead you when you let them distract you from your day. I want to know what you value in others and what you value in yourself – are you honest, kind, good? I want to know your passions – what you love and what you hate, what makes you laugh until you cry and what makes you cry until you laugh.
I want to know about your past. I want to hear all the stories of all the places you’ve been, the people you’ve met and the experiences you made – good and bad. I want to know how they affected you and sculpted you into the person you are today. I want to know about your family and your friends and all the individual roles they play in your life. I want to know who you turn to when you need a shoulder to cry on; who you turn to for a beer on a weekday evening; who has been there for you throughout your life and knows you inside and out.
I want to know about the future: I want to know what you dream about when you picture your life in 10, 20, 50 years. I want to know where you want to be, what you want to have seen, what you want to have accomplished and what you still want to do and become.
What I want to know, is if I can fit in you. If I can become part of the stories you share, become the person you turn to in times of need, in times of sadness, in times of happiness. I want to know if I can help you accomplish your dreams and reach your goals. I want to know if there’s a role for me in your life.
What I really want is to know you; to know every centimeter of your body, to know exactly how to touch you — physically and spiritually. I want to bring a smile to your lips, cause your heart to race and your stomach to do backflips. I want to know what it’s like to love you and be loved by you.
I want to live your life with you step by step until me knowing you is me knowing myself.
