Stop Sleepwalking Through Life And Find Something That Actually Makes You Feel Awake

By

Stop walking from point A to point B while on autopilot, barely taking in your surroundings, because you know the route so well that you don’t even have to think about where you’re going.

Stop having repeat conversations with your friends over text, acting like you’re saying something new even though you’re going over issues that you’ve already discussed a thousand times.

Stop listening to the same radio station that plays the same set of songs that you aren’t even a fan of anymore, because you’ve heard them one too many times.

Stop eating the same breakfast followed by the same lunch and a similar dinner.

You want to know why you feel like your life is so damn boring? Why you have to yank yourself out of bed in the morning, because the last thing you want to do is leave the comfort of your bed?

It’s because every single day, you have a million little choices to make. A million. But you don’t realize the extent of your options, because you keep making the same decisions over and over again. You keep playing your life on a loop.

And, as great as your life is, it’s bound to feel stale once it becomes a constant. Even the best movie gets boring if you watch it over and over for 365 days straight. Repetition will drive you crazy. So break the cycle.

Find something that makes you feel awake. Aware. Alert. Alive.

It doesn’t have to be monumental. You don’t have to quit your job or move across the country or buy plane tickets to Paris. You don’t have to uproot your life and create an entirely new one — just make tiny adjustments to the life you’re already living.

Ask your friends for band recommendations so you can Youtube their albums, and then buy tickets to listen to them live. Borrow one of your mother’s cookbooks and actually attempt to make a meal that isn’t microwavable. Ask your friends to meet you at a rock climbing gym or a wine & painting class, so you can make new memories instead of rehashing the old ones.

Don’t whine about how nothing good goes on in your neighborhood. Google events. Search your town on Instagram. Drive down different blocks. Throw a board game night and invite the neighbors. Find something to get excited about. Anything.

It’s time to stop complaining about how tired you are and how all you want to do is climb back into bed. You’re already asleep. You’ve been sleepwalking through life, doing the minimum in order to get by. In order to make it back to bed and let your mind wander.

But you shouldn’t be thankful at night, when the day is behind you. You should be thankful in the morning, when the day is in front of you. When there are a million possibilities begging you to take a chance on them.

It doesn’t matter if you’re bored, heartbroken, lonely, or lost — the solution is the same. Find something that makes you feel awake. Something that makes you want to stay awake.

Because you shouldn’t settle for sleepwalking through life. You should actually live it.
