Your Friends Should Support You
Your friends are supposed to support you. They’re supposed to be there for you whenever you need them. They’re supposed to give you as much care and respect as you’ve been giving them.
Your friends are supposed to make you feel good about yourself. They’re not supposed to tease you about things that make you uncomfortable. They’re not supposed to point out your flaws. They’re not supposed to make you feel ugly and insecure.
Your friends are supposed to listen to you. They’re not supposed to talk over you. They’re not supposed to make every single conversation about them and their problems while ignoring you and your problems. They’re not supposed to come around whenever they need a favor and go MIA the rest of the week.
Your friends are supposed to push you to follow your dreams. They’re not supposed to make fun of your career path. They’re not supposed to hold you back from pursuing your passions. They’re not supposed to make you feel like you’re never going to make it, like you’re silly for even trying.
Your friends are supposed to stay in contact with you. They don’t need to talk to you every single day because you both have busy lives of your own, but they should make an effort to reach out to you every once in a while. Your texts shouldn’t be left unanswered. Your plans shouldn’t always be turned down. Your friends should rearrange their schedules to see you in person whenever possible so you’re not stuck talking over a screen.
Your friends are supposed to celebrate your accomplishments with you. They’re not supposed to let their jealousy get in the way of your friendship. They’re not supposed to act bitter about you getting married first or getting your dream job first or getting an apartment first. They’re supposed to be happy for you, no matter what.
Your friends are supposed to think highly of you. They’re supposed to brag about you to their other friends and family, they’re not supposed to gossip about you behind your back. They’re not supposed to make mean comments about you as long as you aren’t around to hear them. They’re not supposed to waver back and forth between treating you well and treating you like a piece of trash based on who else is in the room.
Your friends are supposed to act like friends. They’re not supposed to act like your competition. They’re not supposed to act like your enemies. They’re supposed to treat you with kindness. They’re supposed to help you out whenever you need a hand. They’re supposed to be there for you through your highs and your lows.
If your standards are high when it comes to your relationships they should also be high when it comes to your friendships. If your friends are making you feel horrible about yourself, then they aren’t your real friends. You deserve better. You deserve to find a group of people who make you feel supported, not judged.
