Ocean sequence: While not playing an immediate role, the Seattle bay acted as a textural component for the film, residing in the topographic background of numerous scenes, which conveyed a sort of “kind loneliness” of which the film’s rhetoric was mainly comprised. To further water’s conceit, recently widowed Tom Hanks lives on a “houseboat” with his son, as if subconsciously waiting for imminent transplant to occur.
